Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To set up a new MacBook Air, follow Setup Assistant to connect to the internet, create your Mac account, and choose whether to transfer data. You can migrate from another Mac, a Time Machine backup or other storage device, or a Windows PC—or set up the Mac as new and transfer later. Before finishing, check that important files, accounts, settings, and apps arrived successfully.
Before you start
- Have your Wi-Fi password ready, or use a supported Ethernet connection. Some setup steps require internet access, and Setup Assistant may require a software update.
- Connect the MacBook Air to power, especially if you plan to migrate data.
- For a wireless Mac-to-Mac transfer, update both computers where possible, turn on Wi-Fi, and keep them near each other. Apple recommends disabling antivirus, firewall, and VPN software on either Mac until migration is complete.
- A direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster than wireless, according to Apple’s Migration Assistant guidance. Check that the cable, adapters, and ports work with both exact Mac models; a USB-C charging cable does not necessarily support Thunderbolt data transfer.
Apple does not give a universal transfer-time estimate. The time depends on how much data you move and the connection used.
Complete MacBook Air Setup Assistant
- Open the lid to turn on the MacBook Air, then follow the on-screen Setup Assistant prompts.
- Choose a language and region, connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and select any accessibility options you need.
- When asked about transferring information, choose a migration route or continue without transferring.
- Create the Mac computer account and password. Sign in to your Apple Account or create one if needed.
- Review and complete the additional settings offered. Depending on software version, language, and region, these may include Location Services, Screen Time, Apple Intelligence, Siri, and Touch ID.
Setup screens and feature availability can vary by macOS version and region. If you choose not to migrate during setup, you can run Migration Assistant afterward.
Choose a transfer method
| Source | When to choose it | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Another Mac | You have the old Mac available. | Use Migration Assistant on both Macs. Wireless transfer is supported; a direct Thunderbolt or Ethernet connection is often faster. Keep both computers nearby for wireless migration and connect laptops to power. |
| Time Machine backup, startup disk, or storage device | You have a usable backup or a connected source drive. | Select the corresponding source in Migration Assistant and follow the prompts. You do not need to buy a backup drive if you already have a suitable source. |
| Windows PC | You are moving from a Windows computer. | Choose the Windows PC option on the new Mac, then follow Apple’s Windows Migration Assistant instructions, including its direction on the version for your target macOS. |
| Nearby iPhone or iPad | You want to use a compatible Apple device to copy supported settings and retrieve supported content through its iCloud settings. | Apple’s device-based setup instructions specify a Mac starting in Setup Assistant with macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later, plus a nearby, already-set-up iPhone on iOS 18.4 or later or iPad on iPadOS 18.4 or later. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be on for both. Check Apple’s current requirements because supported versions can change. |
| Set up as new | You do not want to transfer now, or do not have the source available. | Continue setup without migration. Migration Assistant can be used later. |
Transfer from another Mac or backup
- In Setup Assistant, select the option to transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, startup disk, or other storage device, as appropriate.
- Follow the prompts on both computers or connect the backup or storage source. If a security code appears, confirm that the same code is shown on both Macs.
- Choose the categories or specific items you want to transfer rather than assuming you must move everything.
- Wait for Migration Assistant to finish, then review its migration summary for reported issues.
Apple says Migration Assistant transfers documents, apps, user accounts, and settings. However, incompatible apps—or apps for which a newer version is already installed on the new Mac—may not transfer or may not work. Transferred email may also require you to sign in to the email account again in the mail app. See Apple Support’s Migration Assistant article for the full guidance.

Transfer from an iPhone or iPad
If the nearby-device option appears and your devices meet Apple’s requirements, follow Setup Assistant’s prompts to connect them. Apple says this method copies numerous settings and uses the device’s iCloud settings to retrieve supported content; it is not the same transfer route as migrating a complete Mac account, apps, and files from another Mac.
