Connect your new MacBook Air to Wi-Fi, follow Setup Assistant, and choose whether to start fresh or transfer data. After setup, enable FileVault and Find My, install the latest macOS version available for your model, and review firewall, sharing, and backup settings.
Before you begin
Have a Wi-Fi connection ready: some parts of Setup Assistant require internet access, and your Mac may need an update during initial setup. Connect the included power adapter and cable if the battery needs charging or you are transferring data. Apple’s Mac setup guide describes the initial process.
Choose whether to start fresh or transfer data
Setup Assistant lets you set up the Mac as new or move data from another device or backup. Neither choice is universally safer; choose based on what you want on the new computer and what source you have. You can also postpone migration and use Migration Assistant later, as described in Apple’s MacBook Air migration guide.
| Setup choice | Best fit | Available source |
|---|---|---|
| Set up as new | You want to begin without transferring another device’s data. | No transfer source required. |
| Transfer during setup | You want to bring existing data over now. | Another Mac, a Time Machine backup, a startup disk, a Windows PC, or an iPhone or iPad, as available in Setup Assistant. |
| Transfer later | You want to finish setup first and decide what to move afterward. | Migration Assistant can transfer data later from supported sources. |
Follow the on-screen prompts for the source you choose. Transfer options and prompts can vary with the devices and macOS version involved.

Finish Setup Assistant
Create the Mac’s computer account and a login password. You can sign in to your Apple Account if you want Apple services and iCloud features on the Mac. Choose accessibility options that help you use the computer, then complete the remaining personalization prompts, which may include Location Services, Screen Time, Touch ID, and Siri.
Touch ID makes authentication convenient, but it does not replace the need to protect your account password. Keep that password private and make sure you can recall it.

Turn on FileVault and protect its recovery method
Apple says Mac computers with Apple silicon or a T2 chip encrypt data automatically. FileVault adds a further layer by requiring your login password before someone can decrypt or access your data. See Apple’s FileVault guide for the current steps to turn it on for your macOS release.
When enabling FileVault, choose the recovery method offered and understand how you will regain access if you forget your login password:

Background security improvements, security-configuration updates, and system data files are installed automatically by default. Some changes take effect only after a restart. The setting’s location depends on the macOS version:
- macOS Tahoe 26 or later: Find macOS updates under System Settings > General > Software Update. Background Security Improvements has a separate control under System Settings > Privacy & Security.
- macOS Sequoia 15, Sonoma 14, or Ventura 13: Look for “Install Security Responses and system files” under System Settings > General > Software Update.
Review the firewall and sharing settings
The built-in firewall helps block unwanted incoming connections. Apple’s firewall guide places Firewall under System Settings > Network for the macOS 26 interface. Turn it on, then review the sharing services and disable those you do not use.
Sharing services such as file sharing open specific ports so the related service can work. Blocking an app’s incoming connections can also disrupt that app or other software that depends on it, so avoid treating every incoming connection as something that must be blocked.
Use passkeys where supported
For websites and apps that support passkeys, you can store them in iCloud Keychain and use Touch ID, a nearby iPhone or iPad, or an external security key to authenticate. Passkeys are an account sign-in option, not a requirement to secure the Mac itself. Apple describes the feature in its passkey guide.
Set up a Time Machine backup
Apple recommends backing up your Mac before upgrading macOS and documents using Time Machine with an external storage device. If you want a local backup destination, an external SSD or hard drive is an optional purchase; the source does not establish a particular capacity or model recommendation. Follow Apple’s Time Machine backup guide to configure the drive and backup.
