Start by deciding whether to migrate your files and settings or set up the Mac as new. Then sign in to your Apple Account, choose only the iCloud services you want, enable Find My, review security and update controls, and create a Time Machine backup. The exact options and labels vary by macOS version, Mac hardware, and region, so use the matching controls shown on your device.
1. Choose whether to migrate or start fresh
During Setup Assistant, you can transfer information from an iPhone or iPad, another Mac, a Time Machine backup or startup disk, or a Windows PC. You can also set up the Mac as new. Apple’s Mac setup guide describes these transfer paths and other options presented during setup.

Setup Assistant also offers choices such as Location Services, Screen Time, Apple Intelligence, Siri, and Touch ID where supported. Accessibility options can be enabled during setup or configured later.
2. Sign in to your Apple Account and choose iCloud services
Sign in from Apple menu > System Settings > Sign In with your Apple Account. After signing in, open the account’s iCloud settings and select the services you want to use, such as Photos, Notes, or iCloud Drive. Apple’s iCloud setup instructions describe these controls.

Signing in does not require you to sync every category. Choose based on what you want available across your signed-in devices and what you want stored in iCloud. In iCloud settings, you can control whether Desktop and Documents folders are stored in iCloud Drive and which apps use iCloud; see Apple’s iCloud settings guide.
Consider Advanced Data Protection only if you can manage recovery
Advanced Data Protection provides end-to-end encryption for the majority of iCloud data. It requires you to set up a recovery contact or recovery key: Apple does not hold the keys needed to recover that protected data. Availability varies by region, so review Apple’s current requirements and make sure your recovery method will remain accessible before enabling it.

3. Enable Find My Mac
Find My can help locate, lock, or erase a Mac. It requires Location Services, and finding devices or sharing location is not available in every country or region. Follow Apple’s Find My Mac instructions and confirm the feature is on for the account you use on this Mac.
When you add your Mac to Find My, Activation Lock is automatically turned on. This can help prevent someone else from using the Mac without authorization if it is lost or stolen.

4. Review security and privacy controls
Choose a FileVault recovery method
FileVault protects the Mac’s startup disk by requiring a login password to access its contents. In System Settings > Privacy & Security, review FileVault and follow the on-screen instructions if you enable it. Apple’s FileVault guide describes the available recovery choices: use your account to unlock the disk, or create a recovery key. If you choose a key, store it somewhere secure and accessible; if you forget the login password, the recovery method matters for regaining access to encrypted data.
Keep app-download protections in view
macOS lets you allow apps from the App Store, or from the App Store and identified developers. These choices affect which apps can be opened without additional steps. Apple documents the controls in its Privacy & Security settings guide. Choose the option that fits your software needs without bypassing warnings for apps you do not trust.

Decide how to handle connected accessories
On Apple silicon laptops, USB and Thunderbolt accessories and SD cards may require approval. The available accessory connection choices let you balance convenience with control over what can connect. Review the approval behavior in Privacy & Security and choose according to your normal workflow; do not assume every Mac has the same options.

Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update to check manually and review available updates. Apple’s macOS update instructions also describe automatic options for downloading updates, installing macOS updates, and installing security responses and system files. On a laptop, automatic downloads may require the power adapter to be connected.

Labels and available options can differ by macOS release. Review the controls displayed on your Mac and decide whether you want unattended installation or prefer to approve update timing yourself.
6. Set up a Time Machine backup
Time Machine is built into macOS and can automatically back up files—including apps, music, photos, email, and documents—to a USB drive or other storage device. Follow Apple’s Time Machine setup instructions to choose a backup destination and complete setup.
An external USB storage drive is one possible destination; a compatible drive you already own may be suitable. Choose storage based on the amount of data you need to protect and the connections supported by your Mac rather than assuming one size or connector works for everyone.
Time Machine and iCloud do different jobs. iCloud sync makes selected information available across signed-in devices, while Time Machine keeps a backup intended to help recover files. Using one does not automatically provide the other, so decide whether you want both forms of protection.
