Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo set up a new iPad Pro and transfer data from your old iPad, use Apple’s Quick Start: place the iPads near each other, turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the old iPad, and follow the prompts on both screens. Choose a direct transfer or download from an iCloud backup. If the old iPad isn’t available, restore the new one from an iCloud or computer backup instead.
Choose the transfer method that fits
| Method | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Quick Start direct transfer | Your old iPad is available and you want to move data directly between devices. | Both iPads are occupied during migration. Keep them close and plugged into power; the time varies with network conditions and the amount of data. |
| Quick Start with iCloud download | You have a suitable iCloud backup and want to begin using the new iPad sooner. | Apps and data download in the background, so some content may not be ready immediately. |
| Restore from iCloud backup | The old iPad is unavailable, or you prefer restoring a backup. | You need the Apple Account used for the backup and a network connection. A new iPad that has already been set up must be erased before using this restore route. |
| Restore from computer backup | You have a backup stored on a Mac or PC. | You need the computer containing the backup and, if it is encrypted, its password. An unencrypted backup does not transfer the Health and Activity data Apple identifies. |
Quick Start is not available for transferring data from devices enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business. For a managed iPad, follow your organization’s setup process or use a supported backup and restore method.
Prepare both iPads
- Keep the old iPad available and unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi, and with Bluetooth turned on. Apple’s current Quick Start instructions require the current device to use iOS 11 or iPadOS 13 or later; update both devices where possible. Apple’s Quick Start instructions have the current requirements.
- Have the Apple Account password ready and make a backup of the old iPad before starting. Apple says people buying a new iPad may be eligible for temporary iCloud storage to make a transfer; availability is subject to Apple’s eligibility rules. See Apple’s transfer overview.
- Choose a time when you can leave the old iPad unused. Check that you have suitable cables and power adapters for both devices; buying additional charging equipment is not inherently required.
- If the new iPad Pro is a cellular model, be prepared to activate or transfer its cellular plan separately. That process depends on the carrier and plan.
Transfer directly with Quick Start
- Turn on the new iPad Pro and leave it at the Hello screen. If it has already been set up, see the erase warning below before proceeding with a backup restore.
- Place the old iPad nearby. Make sure it is unlocked, connected to Wi-Fi, and has Bluetooth turned on. Follow the Quick Start prompt that appears on the old iPad.
- Continue through the instructions on the new iPad. Enter the old iPad’s passcode if asked, then complete the authentication and security prompts.
- When asked how to transfer your data, choose direct transfer to move it from the old iPad, or choose the iCloud option if you want to download from a backup.
- For a direct transfer, keep both iPads near each other and connected to power until it finishes. Apple says to keep them close and plugged in until migration is complete. Transfer time varies with network conditions and the amount of data being moved. With an iCloud download, you can use the new iPad sooner while apps and data continue downloading in the background. See Apple’s Quick Start instructions.
Restore from an iCloud backup
Use this method if the old iPad isn’t available or you’d rather restore a backup. You need the Apple Account associated with that backup.
- Start at the new iPad’s Hello screen, proceed through the initial setup, and connect to Wi-Fi.
- At the transfer or restore screen, choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used to create the backup. Choose the intended backup by checking its date and size.
- Keep the iPad connected while the restore runs. Photos, apps, and other content synced with iCloud may continue downloading after setup.
If the new iPad has already completed setup, Apple’s documented restore route requires erasing it first. Erasing removes the iPad’s current contents. Check for files, photos, or other information you need to keep, and make a backup or save them elsewhere before erasing. Apple’s iCloud backup restore instructions describe the restore process.

Restore from a Mac or PC backup
Use the computer that holds the backup. Apple’s restore instructions use Finder on newer Macs, and Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows and supported older Mac configurations.
- If the new iPad is already set up, first check Apple’s restore instructions. The documented backup-restore flow requires erasing a device that has already been configured; erasing removes its contents, so preserve anything you still need.
- Connect the new iPad to the computer that contains the backup. Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, depending on your computer, and select the iPad.
- Choose the option to restore the backup. Select the intended backup by checking its date and size.
- If the backup is encrypted, enter its password when prompted. You must know this password to restore that backup.
- Keep the iPad connected while the restore completes. Apple warns that Health and Activity data from an iOS device or Apple Watch will not transfer from an unencrypted computer backup.
Apple’s computer-backup restore instructions explain the steps for Mac and PC. For details on encrypted backups and the data they include, see Apple’s backup encryption guidance.
