Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet up a new internet-connected gadget by securing its owner account and your Wi-Fi first, using the manufacturer’s official setup process, installing available updates, and allowing only the permissions its features need. Exact menus and controls vary by make and model, so use the current instructions for your specific device.
Before you begin: identify the device and use its official setup route
Find the gadget’s exact make and model, then locate its current setup guide through the manufacturer’s website or official app listing. Avoid instructions for a similar-looking model: setup steps, privacy controls, and update processes can differ between product generations.
Install the companion app from the manufacturer’s official listing, and bring the phone or computer you will use to setup up to date. Follow the maker’s normal onboarding flow rather than entering credentials into an unfamiliar app or website. NIST’s guidance for organizations describes establishing and verifying trust before giving an IoT device network credentials; that is a useful reason to use the intended setup route, not evidence that every consumer gadget performs network attestation. NIST’s IoT onboarding guidance is technical guidance, not a consumer product checklist.
Secure the owner account and device credentials
- Create or claim the owner account. Use a unique password you do not use for another account. If the device arrives with a default username or password, change it before ordinary use. The FTC advises: “If your device came with a default username and password out of the box, change them.” FTC guidance on securing home Wi-Fi and connected devices.
- Enable two-factor authentication if offered. It adds a second verification step when signing in. If considering a hardware security key, first confirm that the specific account supports it; not every gadget or account does.
- Review who has account access. Add only the people who need access, using individual accounts when the product supports them. Remove old or unrecognized access if the app provides a way to review it.
NIST’s federal IoT configuration profile treats setup as an authorized, documented configuration and uses changing default passwords before production as an example. It is not a consumer regulation or a universal checklist, but it reinforces the value of changing defaults and following the maker’s documented setup. NIST SP 800-213A.
#1 Best Overall
- NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
- WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
- SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
- READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Connect it to a protected home network
Use a Wi-Fi network protected by encryption, and make sure the router itself is not still using its default administrator credentials. Check the router maker’s instructions for changing those credentials and checking for updates. A guest network can help separate a gadget from other devices if your router supports one, but you do not need to buy a new router just to apply these settings. The FTC’s home Wi-Fi guidance covers router and connected-device security.
Enter network details only through the manufacturer’s normal setup flow. Do not share your Wi-Fi password more broadly than necessary, and use the exact model’s instructions if setup offers different network choices.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Install firmware and app updates
Check for updates to both the gadget’s firmware and its companion app before relying on the device. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions about power, restarts, and update order; an update may require the device to remain powered or restart. NIST’s IoT update guidance addresses the update lifecycle, including communicating criticality, timing, dependencies, and possible impacts. NIST guidance on IoT device cybersecurity software updates.
If automatic updates or update notifications are available, enable them if that suits your needs. Automatic updates reduce the chance that you miss a security fix; notifications let you decide when to apply one. The right option and its availability depend on the device and its maker.

Choose permissions by the features you intend to use
When the app requests access to a phone feature or data, ask what function needs it. Allow access needed for a feature you plan to use; decline or revoke access that does not appear necessary. For example, a setup flow may need a phone capability to discover or connect to a nearby gadget, while a feature you never use may not need ongoing access. The specific permissions and their effects depend on the app and operating system.
This is the principle of least privilege: grant only the access required for normal use. The FTC describes that principle in developer guidance for mobile health apps, so it is a practical decision rule rather than a device-specific permission map. FTC mobile health app developer guidance.

Also review privacy and sharing settings in the app or device controls. Depending on the product, these might cover data sharing, voice or video history, tracking, or access by other household members. Prefer privacy-protective defaults where available, and revisit choices after setup or a major app update.

Keep the setup secure over time
Save the model number and the manufacturer’s support information so you can find the right instructions later. Recheck for firmware and app updates and revisit privacy and access settings periodically, especially after a significant app or firmware change. For a future purchase, compare the exact models on documented security settings, account and multifactor options, update delivery and expected support duration, controllable data practices, and whether unused remote features can be disabled. Verify support commitments with the manufacturer; general guidance does not establish model-by-model ratings.
