For a new build, the project’s current installation page covers OMV 8 on Debian 13 (Trixie); its separate existing-Debian instructions cover OMV 7 on Debian 12, so use the guide that matches your release. You can install OMV from its bare-metal ISO or, for a supported matching Debian system, follow the corresponding existing-Debian guide.
What openmediavault does
The openmediavault project describes the software as “a complete network attached storage (NAS) solution based on Debian Linux.” Its web interface lets you administer shared storage, users, groups, and access rights; optional SSH provides command-line access. OMV supports file-sharing protocols including SMB/CIFS, NFS, and FTP. It is aimed primarily at home environments and small offices. Project overview
OMV is modular and can be extended with plugins. Third-party plugins are also available through OMV-Extras; check that any plugin you want is compatible with your OMV release before installing it.
Choose a release-matched installation route
The current project installation page identifies OMV 8 (Synchrony) for Debian 13 (Trixie). It provides a bare-metal ISO route for AMD64 and an installation path for an existing Debian 13 system. A separate guide describes OMV 7 on Debian 12; its instructions are not OMV 8 commands. OMV 8 installation page OMV 7 on Debian guide

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Option 1: Install from the OMV 8 ISO on AMD64 hardware
- Download the OMV 8 ISO from the project’s installation page and write it to bootable CD-ROM or USB media.
- Boot the target computer from that media.
- Follow the text-based installer. It provides choices for the system disk, network interface, and initial setup.
- After installation, administer the NAS through OMV’s web interface; use SSH if you need command-line access.
The ISO procedure described on the page is for AMD64 bare metal. The overview also lists x86-64 and ARM availability, but the ISO steps should not be assumed to apply to every ARM board; check the project’s device-specific instructions.
Option 2: Install on an existing Debian system
For OMV 8, use the project’s existing-system instructions for Debian 13 (Trixie), not the OMV 7 guide. The separate OMV 7 guide is specifically for Debian 12 and says to start with a minimal server installation without a graphical desktop. It also warns that installation is denied when a graphical desktop is detected and that settings for services managed by OMV may be overwritten. Those cautions apply to that OMV 7 / Debian 12 guide, not as a substitute for OMV 8 directions.

Plan the hardware around your storage and network
OMV relies on Debian for much of its hardware support. Plan for a compatible CPU platform, memory, network interfaces, and the drives your storage layout requires. The project recommends 8 GiB of RAM for basic operations in a default installation, while noting that an experienced administrator may be able to run it with as little as 1 GiB. These are project recommendations, not performance guarantees for a particular workload. OMV 8 prerequisites
Choose drives for the storage arrangement
There is no universal drive capacity or recording type required for every OMV installation. Estimate the data you will store and how it will be accessed, then choose capacity and a storage arrangement to suit. For RAID, SnapRAID, or mergerfs, the project recommends CMR drives over SMR drives: SMR drives can stall during rebuilds and parity synchronization. This is configuration-specific guidance, not a requirement that every OMV user buy CMR. Confirm a drive’s recording technology for its exact model before purchase.

With a single data drive, there is no multi-drive RAID, SnapRAID, or mergerfs arrangement to evaluate. With multiple drives, decide on the intended arrangement first, then check that each drive’s characteristics suit its role and workload.
Match networking to the clients
Write speed depends on the NAS computer’s network-interface speed and the speed of the network between the NAS and clients. The number of users accessing storage can also affect throughput. Consider the NIC, network path, and expected concurrent access together rather than judging storage performance by drive specifications alone. OMV 8 hardware and network considerations

Set up file access after installation
OMV supports SMB/CIFS, NFS, and FTP sharing, with access rights managed for users and groups. Choose the protocol that fits the devices and applications that will connect, then configure accounts and permissions for the people or systems that need each share. The specific service configuration can vary by release, so consult the documentation for your installed OMV version rather than relying on labels or steps from another release.
Check compatibility before extending OMV
Plugins add capabilities to OMV’s modular base, and OMV-Extras provides access to additional third-party plugins. Because compatibility depends on OMV version, verify that a plugin supports your installed release before adding it. Do not assume an extension for OMV 7 will work on OMV 8.
