To set up a multiplayer party, choose how everyone will connect, confirm the game and mode support the group, add or find each other, then have one player create a lobby and invite or admit the others. Set the race options and start once everyone is ready. Menu names, player limits, cross-play support, and controller needs depend on the specific game, platform, and mode.
Choose how the group will play
Start by deciding whether everyone is sharing one console, using nearby consoles, or connecting over the internet. These are different setups, and a game may offer separate menus for them.
- Same-console play: Two or more people play on one system. Check how many local players the game supports and whether you have enough compatible controllers.
- Local wireless: Nearby consoles connect directly or through a local wireless feature, if the game offers one.
- Wired LAN: Consoles connect over a shared wired network. For Mario Kart 8 Deluxe LAN play, Nintendo requires the consoles to connect to the same router. Its LAN setup and equipment requirements are specific to that game and arrangement. Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe LAN instructions
- Online play: Each player connects through the game’s online mode. Friends may join a host’s room or use an invitation, depending on the game.
Choose the matching option in the game rather than assuming that LAN, local wireless, and online matchmaking are interchangeable.
Check access, compatibility, and group size
Before creating a lobby, make sure everyone owns or can access the same game, can enter the same multiplayer mode, and is using a compatible platform. If players are on different platforms, confirm that the game supports cross-play for the specific mode and that it is enabled for everyone.

For example, EA says an EA Connect invitation will not work if either player has cross-play disabled or if the selected mode does not support cross-play. EA Connect features also vary by game. See EA’s EA Connect instructions.
Check the game’s player cap before inviting the full group. Limits can vary by game and even by platform within the same game:

Find friends and create the lobby
Use the game’s friend list, platform network, or invitation feature to locate one another. In many games, one player acts as host: they create a room, choose settings, and wait for everyone else to join. Follow the game’s current instructions for its exact menus and whether the room is public, private, or invite-only.
Example: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online
Nintendo’s online instructions have Player 1 create a room and choose race or battle options. Friends find the host under Friends and join; when everyone is in the lobby, the host confirms the settings. Players then select characters and karts and choose preferred courses. Example: EA Connect
For a game using EA Connect, EA’s instructions say to open Friends, select an online friend, and choose “Invite to lobby.” A recipient can accept by choosing “Join lobby.” The labels and availability apply to EA Connect and vary by game; do not expect this flow in other games. EA Help
Set race options and start
Once the group has joined, the host should confirm the mode and any options the game provides, such as race or battle type, teams, items, and number of races. Ask players to choose their characters, vehicles, or other pre-race selections, then start the event when everyone is ready. A host may need to confirm the lobby after the last player joins.

Check equipment only for the setup you chose
For same-console play, make sure each local player has a compatible controller. Nintendo lists Joy-Con or a compatible Switch Pro Controller for two people sharing a Switch in its Mario Kart 8 Deluxe guidance. Check the game and console’s current compatibility information before relying on a particular controller. Nintendo Support
Wired LAN has separate hardware needs. Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe instructions list Ethernet cables, a suitable dock, and a wired router; a network switch may be needed if the router does not have enough ports. These are LAN-specific considerations, not prerequisites for ordinary online play. Nintendo’s LAN guide

If someone cannot join
- The invitation fails: Confirm that the mode supports cross-play and that it is enabled on both sides, if players are on different platforms.
- The room is not visible: Check that the players are using the same multiplayer branch—online, local wireless, or LAN—and that the host has created the room.
- The group is too large: Compare the number of players with the game’s limit for that platform and mode.
- A local player cannot select a controller: Check that the console recognizes the controller and that it is supported for the game’s shared-console mode.
- A LAN connection does not work: For a wired setup, verify that every console is connected to the same router and that the network has enough ports or a suitable switch.
Exact button presses, room visibility, online-service requirements, and mode restrictions are game- and platform-specific. Use the current official instructions for the game you are playing.
