Android transfers are usually simplest during initial setup. Motorola also supports copying data from an iPhone during setup or later from Settings > Back up or copy data on the Razr models covered by its current instructions. Check the copied data before erasing or trading in your old phone.
Before you start
- Keep the Razr and old phone charged, nearby, and connected to Wi-Fi when the transfer flow requires it. For iPhone migration, Motorola recommends more than 30% battery on both phones and keeping both unlocked during the transfer.
- If moving from an iPhone, have its cable ready. Whether a wired connection is possible depends on the connectors on both exact phones; Motorola may prompt you to connect them by cable.
- Do not erase, reset, or trade in the old phone until you have checked that the important contacts, photos, messages, files, and app data are on the Razr or backed up elsewhere.
Motorola’s instructions differ somewhat by Razr generation and software version. The setup wording and later menu options may not look identical on every model.
Set up the Razr and transfer data from an Android phone
- Turn on the Razr and follow the prompts to choose a language and begin setup. Insert a SIM to connect to a mobile network, or skip that step if you prefer.
- Connect the Razr to Wi-Fi when prompted.
- When asked, choose the option to copy data from an old phone. Follow the prompts to find the nearby Android phone, or select a Google account backup if the old phone is unavailable and a suitable backup exists.
- Choose the categories and apps you want to copy, then keep both phones available while the transfer runs. Motorola’s Razr 2025 guide also advises leaving “Back up to Google Drive” enabled.
- After setup, check the Razr for the items you need and sign in to any apps or accounts that still require it.
Motorola says the Android copy flow can include apps and app data, music, photos and videos, Google accounts, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, texts and message attachments, most phone settings, wallpaper, and call history. The exact contents depend on what is available on the old phone or in the selected backup; a backup does not guarantee that every app’s private data or local file is included.
Transfer data from an iPhone
Motorola’s current Razr instructions support copying iPhone data during initial setup. On the Razr, choose the setup route for an iOS device, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to your Google account, and follow the prompts. If the Razr offers a cable connection, Motorola says connecting the phones can make the transfer faster and more reliable; a cable is not universally required.

- Charge both phones above 30% and keep them unlocked during the transfer, as Motorola recommends.
- Start iPhone migration from the Razr’s iOS-device setup option and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If prompted to connect the phones, use a cable compatible with both the iPhone and your Razr. Do not assume one cable type fits every pair of devices.
- When the copy finishes, check the transferred items and allow Google services to sync. Motorola identifies Calendar, Gallery, and Files as Google apps and advises signing in and updating them.
Some content may appear by signing in rather than by copying it directly. For example, data already synced through Google services can show up after you sign in to the same Google account. Photos and videos stored physically on the iPhone can be included in a cable migration, but items stored only in iCloud need to be retrieved through the iCloud route. Photos already backed up to Google Photos should sync after you sign in to that account.
If you skipped copying data during setup
On Razr models covered by Motorola’s current help, open Settings > Back up or copy data to start copying later. Other Android setup flows may instead offer a Finish setting up prompt or an Android Setup notification. Because labels and paths can vary by model and software version, search Settings for “back up or copy data” or use the setup notification shown on your phone.

What may need attention after the transfer
A transfer is not a guarantee that every item or sign-in will move. Motorola lists the following exclusions in its Android and iPhone guidance:
| Moving from | Motorola says these items may not transfer |
|---|---|
| Android | Downloads such as PDFs; apps not from the Play Store; non-Google accounts; contacts and calendars for services other than Google; ringtones. |
| iPhone | FaceTime calls and voice call history; iMessage effects (messages transfer without effects); emergency alert messages; locked Notes; default wallpaper. |
Before you let go of the old phone, check downloaded files, individual apps, authenticator access, non-Google accounts, and cloud photo libraries separately. These items can depend on the app or service, so confirm access directly rather than assuming that the phone-to-phone copy handled them.

Choose direct transfer or cloud restore
| Route | Best fit | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Direct phone-to-phone copy | Your old phone is available and you want to select data during Razr setup. | Follow the prompts for your source phone. A cable may be offered for iPhone migration, but it must match both devices. Some app data and excluded items still require separate attention. |
| Restore or sync from an account | Your old phone is unavailable, or the information you need was already backed up or synced. | Sign in to the relevant account and choose an available backup where prompted. Only backed-up or synced content can be restored this way, and not every local file or app-specific item is necessarily included. |
For Android, Motorola documents using a Google account backup as an alternative when the old phone is unavailable. For iPhone photos, distinguish between items stored on the iPhone, in iCloud, and in Google Photos; they follow different paths.
