To use a physical green screen in OBS Studio, put the backdrop behind you, add your webcam as a Video Capture Source, and apply the Chroma Key filter to that source. Refine the key while watching the preview: similarity controls how much color is removed, while smoothness and spill reduction help with edges. If your computer meets NVIDIA’s requirements, NVIDIA Broadcast is a software alternative that can replace a background through a virtual camera.
What you need for an OBS green screen
- A webcam that appears as a Video Capture Source in OBS.
- A green screen backdrop positioned so it covers the background area visible to the camera.
- Enough room to frame the backdrop behind you. There is no universal camera-to-screen distance established by the sources here; use your camera preview to check coverage.
- Lighting that lets the webcam produce a usable image. Logitech notes that lighting affects image quality, particularly for a C922 stream at 720p and 60 fps; that is not a universal green-screen lighting layout or a guarantee for other cameras. Logitech C922 lighting guidance
Set up the physical screen and camera
Position and frame the backdrop
Place the screen behind you and adjust the camera framing until the screen covers the background you want to remove. Check the entire visible frame, including the edges: a gap or an uncovered object can remain visible after keying. If the backdrop needs support, use a mounting point or a compatible stand; a stand is optional and depends on your screen and room.
Check the webcam image
Look at the webcam image with the room lights on and make sure your face and the visible screen can be seen clearly. Lighting affects webcam image quality, but the cited guidance does not establish a specific number or placement of lights, a required screen distance, or a universal setup. Adjust your room and inspect the result rather than relying on a fixed recipe.
Remove the green background in OBS Studio
- Add the webcam. In your OBS scene, choose Sources > + > Video Capture Device (called a Video Capture Source in OBS documentation), select the webcam, and confirm. Position and resize the source in the preview as needed. See OBS’s Video Capture Sources guide.
- Open the source filters. Select or right-click the webcam source and choose Filters.
- Add Chroma Key. In the Effect Filters area, select +, then Chroma Key, and confirm the filter. OBS describes this filter as removing occurrences of a selected color and identifies it for green-screen use. See OBS’s Chroma Key Filter guide.
- Choose the key color. The default key color type is green. If your physical backdrop is a different color, choose the corresponding key color type or a custom color where available.
- Refine the result in the preview. Adjust the filter controls while watching both the background and your outline. The controls include similarity, smoothness, key color spill reduction, opacity, contrast, and brightness. Higher similarity removes more colors and may also remove parts of your subject; smoothness changes how soft removed edges are; spill reduction targets residual green around the subject. There are no universal values established for these controls, so use the preview rather than copying fixed settings.
- Review the composed scene. Check your outline, hair, clothing, and any objects near the frame edges against the scene you plan to use. Make final adjustments before going live.
Use NVIDIA Broadcast instead of a physical key
NVIDIA Broadcast can remove, replace, or blur a background using a software effect. Its camera output appears as a virtual device, which you select in OBS instead of applying OBS’s Chroma Key filter to a physical green backdrop. NVIDIA’s Broadcast product page lists Windows 10 64-bit, a GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher GPU, at least 8 GB of RAM, and recommends an Intel Core i5 8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher. The page also lists NVIDIA driver requirements. These are the requirements displayed on that page; check NVIDIA’s current documentation before installing or buying hardware because requirements can change.

Choose the setup that fits your room and computer

Neither option is established as universally better. Consider your available space, how you can frame the camera, whether you already own compatible hardware, and whether you prefer a physical keying setup or a software virtual camera.
Equipment choices without overbuying
- Backdrop: A green screen backdrop or collapsible chroma key screen is the core physical item. Choose based on available space, whether you can mount or fold it away, and whether your camera can frame it. The sources cited here do not compare materials, dimensions, or particular products.
- Lighting: Consider webcam lighting or an LED video light if your image is poorly lit. The cited Logitech guidance supports checking lighting for image quality, but does not prescribe a specific light, kit, or layout.
- Stand or mounting hardware: Useful only if your backdrop needs support and your room has no suitable mounting point. Compatibility depends on the backdrop; no specific stand is established as necessary.
Troubleshoot common green-screen problems
Green remains visible
Check that the backdrop covers the entire visible background and that the webcam source is the one carrying the Chroma Key filter. Then adjust similarity gradually while watching the preview. Increasing it too far can remove colors in your subject as well.

Parts of your face, hair, or clothing disappear
Similarity may be removing colors you intended to keep. Reduce it and inspect the subject’s outline; also check the chosen key color. The correct setting depends on the preview and the image being keyed.
The subject’s edges look harsh or green
Use smoothness to adjust the softness of removed edges and spill reduction to address residual key color around the subject. Make small changes and review the composed scene rather than judging only the filter controls.

The result looks inconsistent or noisy
Inspect the webcam image and room lighting. Lighting affects webcam image quality, but the available guidance does not establish a universal light arrangement. Improve the image in the room and reassess the key in OBS.
NVIDIA Broadcast is missing or will not work
Check NVIDIA’s current compatibility and driver information against your operating system, GPU, memory, and processor. In OBS, select the NVIDIA Broadcast virtual camera as the Video Capture Source; selecting the physical webcam instead will not use the Broadcast effect.
