You can use a Fire TV Stick and a Google TV device on the same television: connect each to a separate HDMI port, set each up on its own input, then switch devices with the TV remote’s Input or Source control. You do not combine the two systems into one interface; each keeps its own setup, account and apps.
What you need before setup
- A TV with two accessible HDMI ports, one for each device.
- The Fire TV Stick, its remote and batteries, power cable and adapter, plus Wi-Fi details and an Amazon account.
- Your Google TV device and remote, Wi-Fi or Ethernet access, and a Google Account.
If your TV does not have enough usable HDMI ports, you will need to free a port or consider an HDMI switch. Amazon also identifies an optional HDMI extender as a way to make a Fire TV Stick easier to connect when ports are crowded or hard to reach.
Set up the Fire TV Stick
- Insert batteries into the Fire TV remote.
- Connect the Stick’s USB cable to the power adapter and the Stick. Plug the Stick into an available HDMI port on the TV, then connect the adapter to a wall outlet. Amazon’s standard setup guide advises against powering this model through the TV’s USB port; use the guide for your specific generation if its power instructions differ. See Amazon’s Fire TV Stick setup instructions.
- Use the TV remote to open Input or Source and select the HDMI port where the Stick is connected.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to or create an Amazon account.
If the Stick is difficult to fit behind the TV, use the included HDMI extender if your model has one. Amazon notes that an extender can help with a crowded back panel, limited access or a TV mounted close to a wall. Accessories and power requirements can vary by Fire TV model; Amazon’s broader Fire TV setup guide can help you find model-specific directions.
Set up the Google TV device
Connect the Google TV device to a different HDMI port, connect its power, and select that port with the TV remote. Google’s general setup covers a range of Google TV devices; the exact screens and connection details may differ by manufacturer and model.

Switch between Fire TV and Google TV
Use the TV remote’s Input or Source control and choose the HDMI port for the device you want to watch. TV makers use different button names and menus, so look for the control that lists the connected inputs. The Fire TV Stick and Google TV device remain separate: switching inputs changes which one appears on the screen.

Use a Google streaming remote for input control, if supported
Some Chromecast or Google TV Streamer voice remotes can be configured to control TV input. On a supported device, open Settings → Remotes & Accessories → Set up remote buttons, then follow the input-button test and return to the HDMI port used by Google TV. Google says input control is not available on some device models. If the option is missing or does not work, use the TV remote. See Google’s instructions for setting up remote buttons.
