If the website reads the value during startup, register it with page.evaluateOnNewDocument() before navigating. The right method depends on when the page needs the value; browser origin, tab, and context boundaries determine where it is available.
Set session storage after the page loads
page.evaluate() runs code in the page’s JavaScript context, where the browser’s sessionStorage API is available. Pass the key and value as arguments:

}, 'token', 'example-value');Use this approach when the page does not need the value until after it has loaded. Puppeteer’s Page.evaluate documentation describes how the function runs in the page context and accepts arguments.
Set session storage before site scripts run
If application code checks the key while starting up, setting it after navigation may be too late. Register an initializer before navigating:

await page.goto('https://example.com');Puppeteer’s Page.evaluateOnNewDocument documentation says the function runs after a document is created but before its scripts run. It also runs when a child frame is attached or navigated. Register it before the navigation whose page scripts need the value; registering it afterward does not retroactively initialize the already-loaded document.
Pass variable values as function arguments rather than constructing a function string. Both Puppeteer APIs accept arguments, which avoids embedding test data into generated JavaScript.

Verify the value in the page
Read the key back in the same page context:

console.log(stored); // 'example-value' or nullgetItem() returns null when the key is absent. The MDN sessionStorage reference documents the storage API and its behavior.
Understand session storage scope
Origin
Storage is associated with an origin: the scheme, host, and port. A value set on one origin is not available to a different origin, even if the pages look related. See MDN’s same-origin policy overview.

Tab and page session
sessionStorage is partitioned by origin and top-level browsing context. It survives reloads within a page session, but the session ends when the tab or window session ends. A different tab should not be assumed to share the same session storage.
BrowserContext
Puppeteer BrowserContexts isolate browser state across contexts. The Puppeteer browser management guide notes that cookies and local storage are not shared between contexts; session storage also remains subject to its origin and tab boundaries. Use separate contexts when automation runs should have isolated state.

Troubleshoot missing values and errors
- The app does not see the value: If site scripts read it during startup, register
evaluateOnNewDocument()beforepage.goto(). If you registered it after navigation, reload or navigate again so the initializer runs in a newly created document. getItem()returnsnull: Confirm the key spelling, check that the write completed in the intended page, and verify the current URL’s scheme, host, and port match the origin where you set the value.- Storage access throws
SecurityError: MDN notes that access can fail when the origin is not a valid scheme/host/port tuple or browser policy blocks persistence. Check whether the page has an opaque or restricted origin and whether browser settings or policies prevent storage. - A second tab cannot read the value: Session storage is scoped to a top-level browsing context as well as an origin. Set the value in the tab that needs it rather than assuming another tab shares the same page session.
- A separate BrowserContext cannot read the value: Contexts isolate browser state. Initialize the storage separately in the context used for that run.
