For a more predictable commerce PDF, use @media print to create a document-focused layout and @page to specify preferred paper dimensions, orientation, and margins. Then generate and inspect PDFs with the exact browser or renderer—and version—you plan to use. CSS helps establish a consistent output contract, but it does not guarantee identical results across print engines.
How do I make a webpage print correctly?
Give print output its own presentation. A print stylesheet can remove screen-only interface elements while preserving the order, labels, totals, and links that make an invoice, receipt, or catalog useful.
Use a print-specific rule set
Add rules in an @media print block, or put them in a separate stylesheet linked with media="print". Hide navigation, buttons, promotional panels, and interactive controls that do not belong in the document. Keep essential commerce information visible, including customer and order details, line-item headings, tax breakdowns, and totals.
Print rules use the normal CSS cascade: specificity and precedence still determine which declaration wins. If a screen layout unexpectedly remains, inspect competing selectors and styles rather than assuming the print block overrides everything. How do I create a PDF from HTML and CSS?
Choose the page format for the people and workflow that will use the document, then declare it with @page where the renderer supports the relevant settings. CSS Paged Media Level 3 defines size as the preferred page-box dimensions and orientation. The page may still be rendered onto an available sheet, so the declaration is not proof that every browser or print interface will honor the choice identically.

How should print headers and footers work?
Page-margin boxes can hold generated page furniture, such as a document title or page number, if the renderer implements them. For example, a supported margin box can display a page counter with counter(page). Because page-margin features are not uniformly implemented, treat them as renderer-specific capabilities, not as a safe assumption for every browser.
Chrome for Developers documents CSS-generated margin content starting in Chrome 131. Its article also notes that browser-generated headers and footers can still appear when there is room, even when the page supplies its own content. Disable those browser-added elements in the print dialog or renderer configuration if they would duplicate or conflict with your design, and reserve a consistent margin for the furniture you intend to show. How do I stop invoice tables from splitting or getting cut off in a PDF?
There is no single table-break rule established here that works across renderers and commerce templates. Build widths and wrapping around the selected page size, then inspect how the actual output handles fragmentation. The W3C paged-media model describes content flowing across pages and warns that content outside the page box may be cut off or handled differently by user agents.
- Check long product names, SKUs, addresses, and other values to see whether they wrap within the printable width.
- Review line-item tables at page boundaries: verify that headings and rows remain understandable and that no wide value extends beyond the page box.
- Check whether totals remain associated with their labels when they fall near a page break.
- Inspect tax breakdowns and other grouped figures across both short and multi-page documents.
These checks matter because a document that looks correct on screen can fragment differently on paper. The W3C CSS 2.2 paged-media reference describes page boxes, margins, and page breaks, while noting its own limitation concerning specification of page-box size.

How can I make commerce PDFs consistent across runs?
Consistency comes from controlling and checking the output pipeline, not from CSS declarations alone. Record the renderer or browser and version, page-size choice, margin settings, and whether renderer-provided headers or footers are enabled. Generate representative PDFs through that same pipeline and inspect first and later pages, short and multi-page documents, long values, boundary totals, and logo, font, and color rendering.
Browser support for @page features varies. MDN’s reference for the @page at-rule cautions that browsers do not implement every feature in the latest syntax. A renderer and version should therefore be treated as a project constraint, and changes to either should trigger output checks on the documents that matter to your workflow.
