How do I set limits for my child’s playtime or purchasing?
First identify the device the child plays on, the account that owns the game, and where a purchase is charged. A game played on a console may use the console maker’s store for one purchase and a publisher account for another. The control must match the account or payment route you want to manage.
- Set up the child as a child or family member in the platform’s family-management system, rather than relying on settings in an adult account.
- Set platform-level limits for store purchases, age ratings, and playtime on the console or through its family app or web settings.
- Check the game publisher’s parental controls for in-game content, communication, playtime tools, and purchases billed by that publisher.
- Make a small, controlled test of the settings where appropriate, and check that the child’s account—not only the parent’s—is subject to them.
The control layers differ by platform. These distinctions reflect official help guidance available on October 7, 2026; menu names and policies can change.

How do I set parental controls on Nintendo Switch?
Nintendo provides console controls and the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. A parent or guardian can use the app to manage restrictions and playtime, review gameplay history, and allow selected games to ignore restrictions. Nintendo Account settings can restrict eShop spending or the visibility of content based on age.

Choose the control that matches the task
- Use the console or app for playtime and gameplay restrictions.
- Use Nintendo Account eShop restrictions when the goal is to limit spending or age-related content visibility in the store.
- For Fortnite, add Epic Games Parental Controls if you want to manage age-rated experiences and features within the game. Nintendo’s guidance notes that Switch-level settings can allow Fortnite while Epic settings manage what happens inside it.
- On Switch 2, check the separate app controls for GameChat restrictions.
Available options and steps depend on whether the child uses Switch or Switch 2 and on the app and account settings in use. Nintendo’s official support guidance covers the relevant generation-specific controls.
How do I set a spending limit on PlayStation?
Manage a child’s spending limit through PlayStation family management and parental controls. Use the current PlayStation family-management settings to manage the child’s account access and spending; playtime controls are available in the same broader family-management system.

PlayStation notes that a setting changed while the child is in a game may not take effect until the child signs out and signs back in. Its support guide includes a PS5 setup video, so check the console-specific interface if the menu labels differ on another PlayStation model.

- Sign in with the organizer account.
- Open Settings > Account > Family settings and select the child.
- Go to Privacy & online safety > Xbox Live privacy > View details & customize > Buy & download.
- Turn on Ask a parent.
Microsoft also says purchase-approval requirements can be changed from a PC. Family organizers can add money to a child’s Microsoft account so purchases draw from that balance, enable approval for every purchase, and review spending activity. Microsoft says a child needs approval for purchases above their age limit or when the account balance is empty.
Set Xbox playtime limits
Microsoft Family Safety can set app and game limits for connected Windows, Xbox, and Android devices through the app or web controls. Choose hours per day and permitted time windows, with different schedules for different days. On Xbox, screen time continues to count while the child remains signed in, even if the console is not actively being used.

What do Epic Games parental controls cover?
Epic’s parental controls cover Epic account services, including Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and Epic Games Store. The available controls include spending limits, chat restrictions, playtime limits, content filters, and activity reports. They do not replace console or store controls: a purchase billed through PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, or Nintendo is governed by that platform’s settings.
Understand Epic’s $100 daily limit
Epic’s parental-controls page says an account indicating that its player is under 13 receives a $100 daily limit for purchases using Epic payment. A parent or guardian PIN is required to override purchases that exceed the limit. The daily total applies to Epic-payment purchases across Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, and Epic Games Store; it is not a cap on all of a child’s game spending. Console-platform purchases and purchases made with in-game currency, including V-Bucks, are excluded.

Check the random-item setting
Epic offers an Allow Paid Random Items setting for spending V-Bucks or V-Buck-purchased content on random-reward items. Epic says availability varies by region, so the setting may not appear in every account or location.
What if my child plays Roblox or another game?
The available official guidance does not establish current, step-by-step Roblox spending-limit instructions, so do not assume Roblox has a particular allowance or approval control based on the settings described above. For any game not covered here, identify the billing account first, then consult that game’s current official safety or parental-controls guidance for its content, communication, and publisher-billed purchase settings.
