Start with the child’s own account, then choose daily limits, app limits, downtime, and content restrictions to suit your family. Check the phone’s operating system and version first; menus and feature availability vary.
Choose the controls that match the child’s phone

Family Link does not supervise a child’s iPhone or iPad. A parent can use an iPhone to run the Family Link app, but the child’s supervised device must be supported, such as an Android phone or Chromebook. Microsoft Family Safety’s phone screen-time controls are for Android; the service also supports connected Windows and Xbox devices.
Set up parental controls on an iPhone
Start with the child’s Apple Account
Apple recommends creating a Child Account through Family Sharing before configuring the child’s safeguards. An account with an incorrect birth date may not offer some age-based protections, and an account belonging to someone else may not provide the same safeguards.
Configure Screen Time
- On the iPhone, open Settings > Family.
- Tap the child’s name to open the family parental controls.
- Open Screen Time and configure the time allowances, app limits, downtime, and restrictions that fit your family’s rules.
- Set a Screen Time passcode the child does not know. Apple recommends this so the child cannot simply change the settings.

Set screen-time limits on Android
Use Family Link for remote parent management
Family Link lets a parent manage a supervised child account from the parent’s device. Google lists a parent Google Account, an adult age (or the applicable age in the parent’s country), supported parent and child devices, a child Google Account, and same-country residence among the requirements. Availability and requirements can vary, so check Google’s current Family Link setup guidance before starting.
- Open the Family Link app on the parent’s device and select the child.
- Tap Screen time > Time limits.
- Turn on Daily limit, then open Weekly schedule.
- Select a day and enter the time allowance. Repeat for other days, or apply the schedule to them if that option is shown.
- Return to the child’s Screen time area to review app limits or grant bonus time when appropriate.
A key limitation: Google says daily limits apply separately to each Android device or Chromebook the child uses. A two-hour limit on a phone does not automatically share a two-hour budget with a second device; set and review limits for each device the child uses.

Use controls on the Android phone itself
Supported Android phones may offer daily total-use limits, scheduled downtime, individual app limits or blocks, and web content filtering. Some controls can be secured with a PIN. Search Settings for Parental controls; if that option is missing, use the device manufacturer’s current help instructions because the path and availability vary by model and Android version. Set mobile limits with Microsoft Family Safety
Microsoft Family Safety phone limits apply to Android, not iPhone. The child’s Android phone must be connected to the family group.

- Connect the child’s Android phone to the Microsoft family group using the child’s Microsoft account.
- Install Family Safety on the child’s phone, sign in as the child, and follow the prompts to enable requested permissions.
- In the parent’s Family Safety app or at family.microsoft.com, select the child and choose Mobile.
- Set the schedule and time limit for the connected phone.

- Daily limit: Sets a total amount of allowed device use for a day.
- App limit: Restricts time spent in selected apps or blocks them where supported.
- Downtime or bedtime: Schedules periods when use is restricted.
- Content restrictions: Limit access to certain types of content, but do not treat them as a complete web filter.
- Bonus time or exceptions: Allow a parent to make a deliberate exception when plans change.
There is no single supported daily-hours number that fits every child in this guidance. Agree on the schedule with the child and review whether it works for school, sleep, family routines, and the apps they actually use.
Check the limits’ coverage
Parental controls only apply where the right account, device, and service are in use. Review the apps, browsers, accounts, and devices the child actually uses, including additional phones, tablets, and computers. Google specifically notes that Google Play content restrictions do not stop restricted results from appearing in search or being opened through a direct link; they are not a universal web filter.
