To set parental controls on a gaming console, first make sure your child has a child or family account, then configure time limits on the platform that account uses. PlayStation manages playtime through its console, web, or PlayStation Family app; Nintendo uses console settings for some restrictions and its companion app for playtime; Xbox app and game limits are managed through Microsoft Family Safety.
Choose both a schedule and what happens when time runs out. Depending on the platform, the console can warn your child, sign them out, or suspend the game. The steps below cover PlayStation 5 and 4, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, and Xbox.
Before you set limits: check the account and device
Parental controls generally work through a child or family member account rather than simply applying to one device. Confirm that your child is using the account you intend to manage and that your adult account has the required family-manager or organizer permissions. Also consider the other controls available—age ratings, communication, user-generated content, privacy, and spending—rather than setting a time cap alone.
- PlayStation: The child must be a family member. The adult changing playtime must be the family manager or an appointed parent or guardian.
- Nintendo: Some restrictions can be configured on the system, but playtime limits and activity history require the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. The playtime limit applies to the console’s users, not separately to each system user.
- Xbox: Microsoft’s documented route sets limits for selected apps and games for a family member through Microsoft Family Safety.
How to set playtime limits on PlayStation 5 or PlayStation 4
PlayStation playtime controls are tied to the child’s family account. You can manage them on a console, on the web, or with the PlayStation Family app. Sony’s instructions for the console menu differ slightly by system.

Set the child’s schedule on PS5
- Sign in to the adult account that is the family manager or an appointed parent or guardian.
- Open Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, set the time zone, then open Playtime Settings.
- Choose whether to restrict playtime, set the daily duration and playable hours, and select what should happen when time is up: a notification or logging the child out.
- Save the settings. You can set different hours or durations for individual days and respond to a child’s request for more time.
Set the child’s schedule on PS4
- Sign in to the adult account with family-manager or parent/guardian permissions.
- Go to Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management.
- Select the child, set the time zone, and choose Playtime Settings.
- Set whether playtime is restricted, the daily duration and allowed hours, and whether the system should notify the child or log them out when time expires. Save your changes.
Playtime restrictions apply across PS4 and PS5 when the child uses both. A change made while the child is playing may not take effect immediately; Sony advises having the child sign out and back in.
Review other PlayStation controls
In family management, review age levels for games and apps, communication and user-generated-content permissions, privacy, browser access, allowed-game exceptions, and spending limits. Settings are associated with the account, so a change can affect the child’s use on other devices too. See Sony’s playtime-management instructions and PlayStation family and parental-control guidance.

How to set playtime limits on Nintendo Switch or Switch 2
Use the console’s System Settings for some restrictions, and the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app for playtime limits and gameplay history. Nintendo says its current app supports Switch 2 as well as Switch.
Set the time cap and bedtime in the app
- Install and link the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, then select Parental Controls.
- Set a Play-Time Limit. You can choose different limits for different days; the available daily cap ranges from no limit up to six hours.
- Optionally set a Bedtime schedule.
- Choose whether to enable Suspend Play When Time’s Up. When enabled, the software stops at the limit. When disabled, the console displays a notification but play can continue.
- Allow the console to connect online so the settings can activate.
If both a playtime limit and bedtime are set, the earlier limit applies. The limit is applied at the console level and restricts all system users equally, so it is not a separate allowance for each child profile.

Set other Nintendo restrictions
For restrictions available directly on the console, open HOME > System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings, then choose an age-based preset or custom settings. Nintendo also provides controls for communication, user-generated content, social posting, and eShop purchases. Some purchasing restrictions are managed in Nintendo Account settings rather than only in the console app.
Switch 2 GameChat has additional rules: a parent or guardian must be involved for players under 16 and supervised users, and players under 16 can use GameChat only with parent-approved friends. Availability and requirements vary by country, so check Nintendo’s local support information. Details are in Nintendo’s parental-controls overview and Nintendo’s setup and app guidance.

How to set Xbox playtime limits with Microsoft Family Safety
Microsoft’s documented instructions use the Microsoft Family Safety app or website to set limits for apps and games. The steps below describe that route; they do not rely on an unverified Xbox console-local menu.
- Open Microsoft Family Safety and select the child or family member.
- Select the Windows/Xbox/Mobile platform.
- Choose Set time limits > Apps, features, and games.
- Turn on app and game limits, select the game or app, and set its daily time allowance and the hours it may be used.
- Choose a repeated schedule or customize the schedule by day. You can also use the family account’s Apps, features, and games tab on the web.
The instructions document daily and allowed-hour limits for selected apps and games, but do not specify an equivalent Xbox enforcement toggle for what happens at the end of time. For current steps, consult Microsoft’s Family Safety screen-time guidance.

What the time limit does on each platform
| Platform | Where to configure | When time is up | How the limit applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 / 4 | Console, web, or PlayStation Family app | Choose notification or log out | Child family account; applies across PS4 and PS5 use |
| Nintendo Switch / Switch 2 | Some restrictions in System Settings; playtime in the companion app | Choose notification or suspend software | Console-level limit applies to all system users |
| Xbox | Microsoft Family Safety app or web | End-of-time enforcement behavior is not specified in the cited Family Safety instructions | Limits are set for selected apps and games for the family member |
If a limit does not seem to work
- Check the account: Make sure the child is signed into the account you selected and that your adult account has the necessary family permissions.
- Check the schedule: Confirm the time zone, day-specific hours, and whether the setting is a daily allowance, allowed-hours window, or bedtime.
- On PlayStation, refresh the session: If the change was made while the child was playing, have them sign out and back in.
- On Nintendo, reconnect online: Settings activate when the console connects to the internet. Also confirm whether suspension is enabled; a notification-only limit does not stop play.
- On Xbox, check the selected game or app: Family Safety limits are configured for selected apps and games, rather than through the console-local route described for PlayStation or Nintendo.
