For YouTube Live using H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Those are starting points, not guarantees that an Indian fiber connection can sustain them around the clock. Measure upload at the streaming computer, leave capacity for fluctuations and other network use, then test your actual OBS stream before relying on it.

Choose a YouTube bitrate for your resolution and frame rate

Use YouTube’s live-encoder recommendations for the codec you actually send—not settings intended for uploading a finished video. The figures below are YouTube’s H.264 live-ingest recommendations; they are not measurements of any Indian ISP connection. YouTube publishes separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply an H.264 number to another codec.

Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p30 8 Mbps
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps

These recommendations come from YouTube’s live encoder settings. Higher resolution or frame rate calls for more sustained upstream capacity. If your connection has little margin, choose a lower resolution or frame rate rather than setting OBS close to the best speed-test result.

Check whether your Indian fiber upload can sustain it

Your plan’s advertised speed and download speed do not establish the upload capacity available to OBS at a particular time. Check upload from the same computer and connection you will use to stream, ideally during the hours and network conditions you expect to broadcast. Other people, devices, and traffic sharing the connection can reduce the capacity available to the stream.

YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom and cautions that network sharing can constrain delivery in its streaming tips. OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. These are planning heuristics, not a precise combined formula or a guarantee of stability. Use the more conservative setting if results vary, and verify it with a live test.

  • Do not treat a single peak speed test as proof of continuous capacity.
  • Account for other devices and services using the same connection.
  • If the available upload varies, reduce the target bitrate or select a lower resolution or frame rate.

Set bitrate and encoder options in OBS

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Output and locate the video bitrate control. OBS identifies this page as the place to lower bitrate when connection-related dropped frames occur. Exact controls can vary by OBS version, output mode, and selected encoder.
  2. Set the bitrate to the YouTube H.264 recommendation for your chosen resolution and frame rate, provided your measured connection can sustain it with headroom. If it cannot, start lower or choose a less demanding video mode.
  3. In the relevant encoder settings, choose CBR (constant bitrate) and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. The controls’ exact location depends on the encoder and OBS version.
  4. Start a private or unlisted test using the real scene, representative movement, and audio you intend to stream.
  5. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators during the test. If connection-related dropped frames appear, lower the bitrate in OBS and test again.

YouTube’s protocol recommendations are in its live encoder settings; OBS describes bitrate adjustment for connection-related dropped frames in its connection troubleshooting guide.

Choose latency based on whether viewers need to interact

If the broadcast is mainly continuous playback and viewers do not need to interact with you in real time, lower latency may provide little benefit. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase buffering. Consider normal latency when immediate interaction is not important, and test the choice with your actual network and audience needs. See YouTube’s latency guidance.

Plan separately for a 24/7 recording

Do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive as the only copy of a continuous program. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends keeping a local archive backup when preserving the broadcast matters. Plan a separate recording and storage approach; YouTube’s guidance does not establish a particular method for splitting or seamlessly archiving a 24/7 broadcast. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Troubleshoot a stream that will not stay healthy

  • Connection-related dropped frames: The upload path may not sustain the configured bitrate. Reduce the bitrate in OBS under Settings → Output, account for shared network use, and repeat the test.
  • Speed tests look good but streaming still falters: A best result does not prove sustained performance. Test from the streaming computer at representative times and avoid using all measured upload capacity for the stream.
  • Health deteriorates when other devices are active: Competing traffic may be consuming the headroom. Retest with that use accounted for and choose a bitrate or video mode the connection can maintain.
  • Automatic archive is missing or incomplete: A broadcast over 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Keep an independent local recording if the program must be preserved.
  • Lower latency causes buffering: YouTube notes this trade-off. If viewers do not need real-time interaction, use a less aggressive latency choice and test again.

Fiber service alone does not establish sustained upload speed, data allowance, outage history, traffic management, or other terms for your address and plan. The cited YouTube and OBS guidance does not verify those details for Indian providers.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube stream to keep playing without leaving a computer at home running OBS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream plays the uploaded video rather than going live from a camera.
