For most desk setups, place your main screen directly in front of you, with its top edge at or just below eye level, and start about an arm’s length away. Adjust from there: you should be able to read without leaning forward, tipping your head back, or turning your neck for long periods. The right position depends on the display’s size, your lenses, your laptop setup, and the light in the room—not on one exact measurement that suits everyone.
How high should my monitor be?
Set the top edge of the screen at or slightly below eye level. That keeps the display below your horizontal line of sight, so you can look slightly downward toward the work area rather than gazing up. OSHA’s workstation guidance says to place the monitor so the top line of the screen is at or below eye level; it describes the screen’s center as approximately 15–20 degrees below horizontal eye level.
Use those measurements as a starting point, not a demand to hold your eyes at a precise angle. A comfortable position lets you see the whole display without raising your chin, bending your neck, or leaning your torso. If the screen is unusually tall or in portrait orientation, check that its top does not rise above your eyes. A screen raised on a computer case or other improvised support can easily end up too high.
People who wear bifocals, trifocals, or progressive lenses may need to set the monitor lower. If you have to tip your head backward to look through the useful part of your lenses, the screen may be too high for your setup. Adjust the height until you can read while keeping your head in a neutral, comfortable position.

How far should I sit from my monitor?
Begin at roughly arm’s length, then settle on the distance where you can read comfortably without moving your head forward. Guidance differs: OSHA gives a general preferred range of 20–40 inches (50–100 cm), while the American Optometric Association gives 20–28 inches. CCOHS recommends an arm’s-length starting point and emphasizes whether the operator can easily read the screen without eyestrain. These are reference ranges, not a universal prescription.
Display size changes what feels comfortable. A large or wide monitor may need to sit farther away so you can take in its edges without repeatedly turning your neck. With a small display, moving it closer is not the only answer: make text larger first, if possible. The useful test is whether you can read the content without squinting, leaning forward, or holding your face unusually close.
If text is hard to read at a comfortable distance, adjust the text or interface size rather than treating a shorter viewing distance as the default fix. Recheck the layout after changing the size: enlarged text can make some content require more scrolling, but the screen should remain positioned for a relaxed posture.
Should my monitor be exactly at eye level?
No. The top of the screen is generally at or below eye level, while the center is lower; you should not have to look upward to see the display. OSHA places the center approximately 15–20 degrees below horizontal eye level, and CCOHS also recommends a position below the horizontal line of sight. Looking slightly downward is usually more comfortable than looking upward for extended periods.
Keep the whole display within a comfortable viewing zone. If you need to lift your chin to see the top, lower the screen or adjust the seating position. If you find yourself bending forward to read the bottom, move the screen closer within a comfortable range or increase text size. Make one change at a time so you can tell whether it reduces the awkward movement.

How do I adjust my screen position step by step?
Adjust the workstation in sequence: establish a stable sitting position first, then set the screen’s horizontal position, height, distance, and angle. Reassess the setup after working in it; the goal is comfortable readability without sustained neck rotation, forward lean, or backward head tilt.
- Settle your chair and desk. Support your feet and sit with your torso upright before measuring screen height. A monitor position that seems right while you are perched or leaning may be wrong once you sit normally.
- Center the main display on your body. Align the screen with your seated position, not just the center of the desk. If you use one monitor most of the time, put that one directly in front of you.
- Set the height. Position the top edge at or just below eye level. Avoid raising the display so far that you must tip your head back, and check the top edge especially on tall or portrait displays.
- Set the distance. Start around arm’s length. Move the display only as needed to make reading comfortable without leaning; increase text size if the text is too small at a comfortable distance.
- Adjust the tilt only as needed. Tilt the display to get a clear view and reduce reflections. OSHA describes a typical tilt of no more than about 10–20 degrees. Do not use tilt to compensate for a screen that is too high or too low.
- Check light and reflections. Look for bright windows, lamps, and overhead lights reflected in the screen. Change the screen’s orientation or manage the light before relying on a filter.
- Recheck while working. After using the setup for a while, notice whether you are leaning in, tipping your head back, or repeatedly turning to see the main content. Adjust the screen or text until reading feels natural.
An adjustable monitor stand or arm can help when the display needs a different height, angle, or position than the desk allows. For printed material you consult repeatedly, a document holder beside the monitor can reduce the need to keep shifting your gaze between a flat page and the screen.
Why does my monitor give me neck pain?
A screen that is off to one side, too high, too low, or too far away can encourage sustained neck or shoulder loading as you turn or lean to see it. The position is a likely setup issue to check—not proof that the monitor is the only cause of pain.
Start with the main screen directly in front of you. If you keep leaning toward the display, check whether the text is too small or the monitor is too far away. If you tip your head back, lower it; if you bend forward to see comfortably, adjust the distance or enlarge the text. Avoid solving one problem by creating another: bringing a screen unusually close may make text readable but can leave you in a forward-leaning posture.
For a wide monitor, look at whether the edges require repeated large turns of the head. Moving it farther away may make more of the display visible with less rotation, provided you can still read comfortably. If you use several screens, keep the display you rely on most centered and avoid placing the primary work area far to one side.

Monitor placement can reduce awkward viewing posture, but it does not identify the cause of ongoing pain. If discomfort persists despite a reasonable setup, consider seeking appropriate professional advice rather than assuming another screen adjustment will resolve it.

How do I stop glare on my screen?
First change the room or screen position; a filter is a later option when reflections remain. Glare can make it harder to see and can prompt squinting or awkward posture as you try to look around reflections.
- Orient the screen relative to windows. Where possible, place the display perpendicular to windows rather than directly facing or backing onto a bright window.
- Control the light source. Adjust blinds or manage bright lamps and overhead lighting that reflect on the display.
- Use a small screen tilt adjustment. Tilt only enough to improve the view or reduce reflections while keeping the screen comfortable to look at.
- Match screen brightness to the room. Adjust the display so its brightness is appropriate for the surrounding light rather than dramatically brighter or darker.
- Consider a matte filter if needed. If positioning and lighting changes do not resolve the reflections, a matte anti-glare screen filter is an accessory option.
Do not start by adding a filter and leave a strong reflection source unchanged. Correcting the orientation or managing the light may address the cause directly. After any adjustment, check whether you can see clearly without squinting or shifting your posture.
How should I set up two monitors?
Let your work pattern decide which screen sits in front of you. If you use one monitor most often, center it and place the secondary display beside it at a comfortable angle. If you use both equally, put them close together in a shallow semicircle so neither requires an extreme turn.
Keep the two screens at similar heights and distances where practical. Before settling on an angle, ask: which display gets the most attention, can that one stay directly in front of you, how much head movement does the other require, and does the desk have enough depth for the chosen arrangement? A secondary screen can sit to the side, but frequently turning toward it for long stretches may make the arrangement less comfortable.

If your work pattern changes, adjust the layout to match. For example, if a display that used to be secondary becomes the main work surface, move it to the center rather than continuing to face a screen off to one side. The important distinction is which screen is primary in practice, not which one is labeled “primary” in software.
How do I position a laptop without hurting my neck?
A laptop’s screen and keyboard are attached, so adjusting one can compromise the other. Raising the laptop screen to eye level may make its keyboard too high, while keeping the keyboard comfortable can leave the screen too low. NIOSH says an external monitor is generally more ideal for display positioning, with the screen about an arm’s length away and its top at or below eye level.
For a more flexible setup, raise the laptop display on a stand or riser and use a separate keyboard and pointing device. That lets you place the display at a comfortable height without requiring you to type on a raised laptop keyboard. A stand by itself raises the screen, but it does not solve the keyboard-position tradeoff if you continue typing on the laptop.
If you cannot use separate input devices, make the best compromise available: keep the laptop where typing is comfortable and avoid a posture that requires you to crane your neck to see the screen. A short-term or space-limited arrangement may not allow both screen and keyboard to be positioned ideally, which is why an external monitor or a raised laptop with separate input devices can be useful when available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan correct positioning prevent all screen fatigue?
No. A comfortable screen position addresses viewing angle, distance, and posture, but it does not eliminate fatigue from prolonged viewing. OSHA recommends periodically looking at farther objects, stopping to look away, and blinking regularly; the American Optometric Association also recommends visual rest and frequent blinking.

Build those pauses into screen work rather than expecting a perfect monitor height to do everything. Looking away and blinking are simple habits to pair with a well-positioned display. If visual discomfort continues, screen positioning alone may not address its cause.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a TV as a computer monitor at my desk?
The guidance here applies to screen position, but it does not establish a suitable viewing distance for every television or setup. Use readable text and a posture that does not require leaning or turning as your practical checks, and adjust the distance to the display rather than assuming one measurement fits every screen.
Will a monitor arm fix neck pain?
An adjustable arm can make it easier to change a display’s height, angle, and position, but it cannot determine why you have pain. Use it to bring the main screen into a comfortable position; persistent discomfort deserves attention beyond changing the mount.

Does a matte screen filter make a monitor easier to read?
It can be an option when reflected light remains after you have repositioned the screen and managed room lighting. A filter is not a substitute for checking whether the display is facing a window or reflecting a lamp.
Should I look at the center of the screen or its top edge?
Use the top edge as a practical height reference, then check how your eyes and head sit when viewing the content you use most. The center will generally be below horizontal eye level, so you look slightly downward rather than upward.
