The controls in Settings > System > Power & battery manage power use, display timeout, sleep, and Energy saver; they do not provide a standard battery charge ceiling.
To limit charging, use the laptop manufacturer’s application or BIOS/UEFI firmware. Depending on the model, the feature may be called Smart charging, Conservation Mode, Battery Care, Battery Health Charging, Battery Charge Limit, or a custom charging threshold.
Check Windows 11 before changing anything
- Open Settings with Win + I.
- Go to System > Power & battery.
- Look for a battery heart icon or wording such as Fully Smart charged.
A heart icon over the taskbar battery symbol, or the message Fully Smart charged when you hover over it, indicates that manufacturer-controlled Smart charging is active. The laptop may remain below 100% while plugged in. That is deliberate battery protection, not necessarily a charging fault.
Windows does not provide one generic switch for configuring or disabling Smart charging. Microsoft directs users to the laptop manufacturer because the implementation differs by model.

Set the charging level by laptop brand
Install the official utility for your exact model first. If the option is absent, check BIOS/UEFI and update the manufacturer’s firmware, drivers, and utility from its support website.
Microsoft Surface: Surface app
On supported Surface models:
- Open the Surface app.
- Select Battery & charging.
- Under Charging mode, select Limit to 80%.
To temporarily charge fully, open Battery & charging and select Charge to 100% under Smart charging. Not every Surface model offers the manual 80% option.
A Surface that stops at 50% may have the separate Battery Limit feature enabled. A device stopping around 80% with a heart icon is usually using Smart charging. Surface Smart charging can also activate automatically after prolonged AC use or when the device is hot. If the battery drops below 20%, it may temporarily allow charging to 100%.
Lenovo: Lenovo Vantage
- Open Lenovo Vantage.
- Open your device settings.
- Go to a path such as Device > My Device Settings > Power or Device > My Device Settings > Battery.
- Enable Conservation Mode, or open Battery Charge Threshold if your model provides individual start and stop levels.
Conservation Mode generally holds the battery around 75–80% instead of charging to 100%. The exact behavior depends on the product.

Lenovo systems may also wait before charging again after being unplugged and reconnected. A battery between 95% and 100% does not necessarily indicate a problem; this delay helps reduce unnecessary charging cycles.
ASUS: MyASUS
- Open MyASUS.
- Select Device Settings.
- Find Battery Care Settings or Battery Care Mode.
- Choose the available battery-care option.
Many current ASUS laptops provide an 80% limit. Some also offer Instant Full-Charge Mode for a temporary 100% charge.
Older ASUS models may use Battery Health Charging instead:

| Maximum Lifespan Mode | Stops above 60% and normally resumes below 58%. |
On some ASUS models, the BIOS may briefly show or charge toward 100% during startup before the Windows service reapplies the selected limit. That short startup change is documented behavior on affected systems.
Dell: MyDell, Dell Power Manager, or BIOS
MyDell
- Open MyDell.
- Go to Power.
- Select Charging Mode.
- Choose Custom.
- Set Start Charging and Stop Charging.
For example, setting start to 65% and stop to 80% makes charging begin at 65% and stop at 80%, subject to the limits imposed by the system BIOS.

Dell Power Manager
Supported models may offer Standard, ExpressCharge, Primarily AC Use, Adaptive, and Custom modes. Choose Custom to specify start and stop percentages when the system supports programmable thresholds.
Dell BIOS/UEFI
- Restart or shut down the laptop.
- At the Dell logo, repeatedly press F2.
- Open Power or Battery.
- Find Battery Configuration, Battery Charge Settings, or Primary Battery Charge Configuration.
- Select Custom, if available.
- Set Custom Charge Start and Custom Charge Stop.
- Save the change and exit.
Dell models differ. If Custom is not listed, that system may not support user-configurable thresholds.
On compatible Dell systems with Dell Command | PowerShell Provider installed, the following example sets a 65% start and 95% stop threshold:

Set-Item -Path DellSmbios:PowerManagementCustomChargeStop "95"This is not a Windows command that works on all Dell laptops. It requires the Dell provider and compatible Dell firmware. Dell documents supported start values of 50–95%, stop values of 55–100%, and at least five percentage points between the two values.
Acer: ControlCenter, AcerSense, or Care Center
Acer ControlCenter
- Open Windows Search and type Control Center.
- Open Control Center, then select Control Panel.
- Select Checkup.
- Find Battery Charge Limit.
- Turn it on and select Continue.
On supported models, this enables an 80% limit.
AcerSense
- Open AcerSense.
- Select Personal Settings.
- Open Battery & USB Charging.
- Turn on Optimized Battery Charging.
Acer documents Optimized Battery Charging as an 80% limit. Some models instead show Full Battery Charging, which restores charging to 100%. If the option is absent, the model may not support it or may use another Acer utility.

HP: usually automatic battery protection
HP does not generally offer a universal control for choosing an 80% or 60% stop level. Select HP gaming notebooks support Adaptive Battery Optimizer, which monitors temperature, charging status, and usage and applies protection automatically. It is not a manual percentage setting.

What Windows commands can and cannot do
Generate a battery report
The built-in battery report is useful for checking capacity and usage, but it does not change charging behavior. Open Windows Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and run:
powercfg /batteryreport /output "%USERPROFILE%Desktopbattery-report.html"Open the resulting HTML file on the desktop to compare design capacity, full-charge capacity, recent usage, and battery history.
Energy Saver is not a charge limit
Windows has an ESBATTTHRESHOLD battery threshold, but it controls when Energy saver turns on. It does not instruct the charger to stop at that percentage. Likewise, Battery saver and Energy saver reduce power consumption; they do not limit the maximum charge.
Why the battery stops at 50%, 60%, 80%, or 95%

| 80% | Smart charging, Surface Limit to 80%, Lenovo Conservation Mode, ASUS Battery Care, or Acer battery protection. |
| 95–100% | Normal charging hysteresis; some systems wait for the battery to fall before charging again. |
Charging often uses separate start and stop points. For example, a mode may stop above 80% but resume only below 78%. This prevents the charger from repeatedly switching on and off around one percentage.

If the charge-limit setting is missing
- Confirm the exact laptop model, not just the brand.
- Install the manufacturer’s current battery utility from its support page or Microsoft Store.
- Update BIOS/UEFI, chipset, embedded-controller, ACPI, and power-management drivers.
- Check both the OEM utility and BIOS/UEFI; a setting may exist in only one of them.
- Remove or disable conflicting third-party battery utilities.
- Check the model’s support documentation. Some laptops simply do not expose a programmable charge threshold.
If the manufacturer provides no supported control, there is no general Windows 11 command that can add one safely. Avoid unofficial scripts that claim to control charging through powercfg; that tool does not provide a universal charge-stop function.
Bottom line
Use Settings > System > Power & battery to manage Windows power use, not to set a maximum charge percentage. For an actual charging level, open the laptop maker’s utility or BIOS/UEFI: Lenovo Vantage, MyASUS, MyDell, Dell Power Manager, Acer’s battery tools, or the Surface app. The precise option depends on the model, firmware, and installed drivers.

Can Windows 11 stop a laptop charging at 80%?
Not through a universal Windows 11 setting. The laptop manufacturer must provide the limit through firmware, BIOS/UEFI, Smart charging, or an OEM application.
Where is the battery charge limit in Windows 11 Settings?
There is no standard charge-limit page. Settings > System > Power & battery contains power mode, Energy saver, screen, sleep, and related controls, but not a universal maximum-charge setting.

No. powercfg manages Windows power schemes, sleep and hibernation behavior, energy thresholds, and battery reports. It does not provide a general command to stop charging at a selected percentage.
Why does my laptop stay at 80% while plugged in?
A manufacturer battery-care feature or Windows Smart charging is probably active. Check the laptop’s official utility and look for Conservation Mode, Battery Care, Battery Health Charging, Smart charging, or a custom threshold.
Why does my laptop stop charging at 95%?
Many laptops intentionally use separate charge-stop and charge-start thresholds. They may wait until the battery falls several percentage points before charging again, which protects the battery and prevents rapid cycling.
The Bottom Line
Windows 11 has no universal manual battery-charge limit. To stop charging at 80%, 60%, or another level, use the laptop manufacturer’s supported application or BIOS/UEFI setting. If your model provides neither, Windows cannot add the feature with Settings or powercfg.
