To make just one page landscape in desktop Word, select the text on that page, open Page Setup, choose Landscape, and set Apply to to Selected text. Word adds the section boundaries needed to keep the rest of the document in its existing orientation.
Change one page to landscape using Selected text
This is usually the quickest method when the page contains text or other content you can select. The labels and menus vary slightly between Windows and Mac.
Word for Windows
- Select the text on the page you want to change.
- Open Layout and launch the Page Setup dialog. Depending on your Word window, use the small dialog launcher in the Page Setup group.
- On the Margins tab, choose Landscape.
- Set Apply to to Selected text, then confirm with OK.
Word for Mac
- Select the text on the page you want to change.
- Choose Format > Document > Page Setup.
- Choose Landscape, then select Selected text under Apply to.
- Confirm the change.
After applying the setting, review the document. Because orientation and section boundaries affect text flow, content may reflow and change where pages begin or end.
Use section breaks for more control
A section break lets Word apply formatting, including orientation, to a specific part of a document. Use this approach when you want to define the page or group of pages as a section yourself, or when the content is already in its own section.

Isolate one page
- Place the cursor at the start of the page that should be landscape.
- Choose Layout > Breaks > Next Page under Section Breaks. This starts a new section on the following page.
- Place the cursor at the end of the landscape page and insert another Next Page section break. The content after it begins in a separate section.
- Click inside the section for the page you want to change. Open Page Setup, choose Landscape, set Apply to to This section, and confirm.
If the section breaks are hard to find, turn on Show/Hide formatting marks to display them. A regular page break only starts a new page; it does not create the section boundary needed to apply a different orientation.
Choose the right section-break type
- Next Page: Starts the new section on the next page. Use it when the landscape section should begin on its own page.
- Continuous: Starts a new section on the same page. It is useful for formatting changes that do not require a new page, such as changing columns, but it is not the usual choice for isolating a full landscape page.

If the whole document changes orientation
Reopen Page Setup and check the Apply to setting. Choose Selected text for the selected-text method or This section when changing an existing section. If the target page is not isolated, add section breaks before and after it, then apply Landscape to that section.

Word for the web limitation
Word for the web cannot add or change section breaks. Open the document in desktop Word to create section boundaries or use a section-specific orientation workflow; the web and desktop steps are not identical.
