Chrome has no standard consumer setting that makes every normal launch open in Incognito. On desktop, you can create a separate shortcut that launches an Incognito window; it affects only launches through that shortcut. For occasional use, open Incognito from Chrome’s menu or keyboard shortcut.
Can you make Chrome always start in Incognito?
No built-in startup preference does this. Chrome’s startup settings choose what page or pages appear when the browser starts; they do not set the browser to launch in Incognito. See Google’s homepage and startup page settings.
Launch Incognito with a separate Windows shortcut
A Google Chrome Community response suggests adding the -incognito switch to a Chrome shortcut, for example chrome.exe -incognito. This is a community-sourced workaround, not a global Chrome setting or a documented official settings path. The response is dated April 23, 2024. Keep your regular Chrome shortcut if you still want to open normal browsing sessions.
The workaround applies when you launch Chrome using the shortcut you modified. It does not change how every Chrome icon, web link, or operating-system launch behaves. The community response supports the switch-based approach but does not establish a current, fully verified sequence of Windows dialog steps. See the Chrome Community discussion.

Open an Incognito window when you need one
Google documents these options for opening Incognito on demand:
- Menu: In Chrome, select More > New Incognito window.
- Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS: Press Ctrl+Shift+N.
- Mac: Press Command+Shift+N.

When a work or school device controls Incognito
An organization can manage whether Incognito is available. Chrome Enterprise’s IncognitoModeAvailability policy has three values:

This is administrator control for managed browsers, not a personal startup preference. Administrators can deploy the policy through Windows administrative templates, macOS configuration profiles, or Linux managed policy files. They can restart Chrome and check chrome://policy to verify whether a policy was applied. If the Incognito option is unavailable or appears to be controlled on a managed device, contact your organization’s administrator rather than trying to change its policy yourself. What Incognito does—and does not—keep private
When you close all Incognito windows, Chrome does not retain the session’s site data or a record of the sites visited. During the session, it temporarily holds cookies and site data. Downloads and bookmarks remain on your device.
Incognito is not anonymity: it does not stop websites, an organization managing your network, or your internet service provider from observing activity. Google explains these limits in its Incognito help page.
