Set smartphone boundaries with your tween around sleep, schoolwork, family time, content and the child’s needs—not a universal daily screen-time number. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends considering what a child does on a screen and how it fits into the rest of life, then making a family-specific plan together.
Why a fixed daily limit is not the whole answer
The AAP does not recommend one screen-time limit that applies to every child and teen. Its guidance says to consider both the amount and the quality and context of media use. A school assignment, a call with a friend, creative work and social-media scrolling are different activities; counting every minute as equivalent can obscure what is actually helping or causing problems.
Instead, look at whether phone use is crowding out sleep, physical activity, homework, reading, hobbies or face-to-face time. The AAP’s Screen Time Guidelines also encourage families to make some times and places screen-free, such as family meals.
Start with your tween’s routines and needs
Early tweens and teens, described by the AAP as ages 10–14, are developing independence and stronger peer connections. Include your child’s perspective when setting rules: the aim is a workable agreement and growing judgment, not simply a list of restrictions.

Before proposing rules, ask what the phone is used for, what feels positive, what feels stressful and when it is hardest to put down. The AAP’s 5 Cs offer a useful way to organize the conversation:
- Child: Consider your tween’s temperament, maturity, responsibilities and needs.
- Content: Talk about what they watch, play, read and share, and whether it is age-appropriate.
- Calm: Notice whether the phone is being used to settle difficult feelings and discuss other ways to cope.
- Crowding Out: Check whether phone use is displacing sleep, schoolwork, activities or relationships.
- Communication: Keep conversations open so your tween can bring you a confusing, upsetting or unsafe experience.
The AAP’s 5 Cs questions for young teens can help turn those topics into a discussion rather than an interrogation.

Agree on a few concrete boundaries
Choose rules that address a specific routine or concern. Keep them simple enough to remember, and agree on how they will work on school days, weekends and special occasions.
| Boundary | What it protects | Ways to put it into practice |
|---|---|---|
| Phone-free meals or shared time | Conversation and attention | Put everyone’s devices in an agreed place during meals or family activities. |
| Homework focus period | Concentration and completing schoolwork | Use a focus or do-not-disturb setting; decide together whether the phone should be nearby or parked elsewhere. |
| Nighttime phone parking outside the bedroom | Sleep and a calmer bedtime routine | Set up a shared charging spot outside bedrooms and agree when phones go there. |
| Fewer interruptions | Attention during school, homework or bedtime | Mute nonessential notifications, use focus settings or turn off autoplay where available and appropriate. |
| Download, contact or purchase limits | Age-appropriate access, privacy and spending | Use device or platform controls as part of a conversation about what is allowed and why. |
The AAP advises keeping phones and gaming devices out of bedrooms at night and suggests focus or do-not-disturb settings during school, homework and bedtime. A shared charging area can make the nighttime rule easier to follow; a lock box is optional, not a medical requirement or an AAP-endorsed product.

Talk about content, privacy and difficult experiences
Time limits alone cannot address every online risk. Discuss what is appropriate to watch or share, who can contact your tween, privacy settings, and how ads and influencer marketing can shape what appears in a feed. Agree that your child can come to you if an online interaction feels scary, mean or upsetting, without assuming they will be blamed for raising it.
Supervision and parental controls can support the family agreement, but they do not guarantee safety. Choose settings that fit your tween’s maturity and the specific concern, and explain what is being monitored and why. The AAP’s Family Media Plan includes examples of household rules and control categories families can consider.

Make it a family plan, then revisit it
Write down the few boundaries everyone has agreed to, including what happens when a rule is difficult to follow. Make a plan for caregivers as well as children: putting phones away during shared time models the attention and balance you are asking of your tween. If an adult needs a phone for a particular reason, explain that rather than treating the rule as applying only to the child.
The AAP’s Family Media Plan is a free planning resource. Revisit your agreement regularly, especially at transitions such as the start of a school year or a holiday break. Ask what is working, what feels too strict or too loose, and whether changes in school, activities or maturity call for a different arrangement. The AAP’s conversation starters about media can help begin those check-ins.
