To schedule a time when a teen cannot use ChatGPT, link their account and set Quiet hours in Settings > Parental controls. Study hours is not a screen-time limit: it starts eligible new chats in Study mode but does not block access. Pair the setting with a family agreement that protects sleep, school responsibilities, meals, and time with other people. OpenAI has not published a universal daily-minute allowance for teen ChatGPT use.
Choose the right ChatGPT schedule control
Quiet hours and Study hours serve different purposes. Use Quiet hours for a scheduled cutoff; use Study hours only if you want eligible new conversations to begin in a learning-oriented mode.

Set Quiet hours for a teen account
- Start the link: In ChatGPT, a parent or guardian—or the teen—opens Settings > Parental controls and starts an invitation to link the accounts.
- Have the teen accept: The accounts are not linked until the teen accepts the invitation.
- Open the teen’s controls: In the parent account’s Parental controls, select the linked teen under Family members.
- Schedule the cutoff: Turn on Quiet hours and choose the start and end times. OpenAI says you can add more than one time block.
- Check the result: Some settings affect only new conversations, and changes may not apply immediately. Confirm the control’s behavior in the account after changing it.
Because feature availability can vary by region and eligible teen accounts, check the settings shown in your own account rather than assuming every family has identical options. OpenAI describes the teen rollout in its ChatGPT for Teens announcement.

Agree on limits that fit the teen and household
A schedule works best when it is part of a clear, shared routine rather than an unexplained technical restriction. OpenAI’s parent guidance encourages families to talk about AI and establish boundaries; its teen-protection materials describe safeguards and features intended to support balanced use. Those sources do not prescribe one schedule for every teen. See OpenAI’s parental controls announcement, teen safety policies, and teen safety blueprint.
- Define the purpose: Agree what ChatGPT is for in your household, such as homework support, creative work, or everyday questions.
- Choose protected times and situations: Decide when ChatGPT is put away, including the times needed for sleep, schoolwork, meals, or offline relationships.
- Try the routine, then revisit it: Adjust the agreement together based on the teen’s age, intended use, responsibilities, sleep, and wellbeing.
These are practical family choices, not a clinically validated schedule. The sources cited here do not establish a ChatGPT-specific daily allowance such as a fixed number of minutes. If your family chooses a daily duration, treat it as your own starting rule—not an official OpenAI limit or medical recommendation.

Know what parental controls do not show
Linking accounts does not let parents read the teen’s conversations or chat history, or monitor their activity in real time. OpenAI says limited safety notifications may provide a concern and support information, but not conversation transcripts. Explain that privacy boundary while agreeing on expectations. When the schedule does not behave as expected
- The teen can still access ChatGPT: Check that Quiet hours—not Study hours—is enabled, that the selected account is the linked teen, and that the current time falls within a configured block.
- A change seems delayed: OpenAI notes that some changes may not take effect immediately or may apply only to new conversations. Recheck the account and confirm the control’s behavior.
- A control is missing: Availability may depend on region and rollout eligibility. Check the teen’s account settings for the options actually available.
