Set a clear limit on when you play, how people can contact you, what you share, and how you expect to be treated. Tell your gaming friend plainly, make the limit easier to keep with privacy and notification settings, and leave or block the person if they ignore it. You do not owe anyone an explanation or continued access to you.
Decide what you want to change
Before messaging your friend, identify the specific friction point. A boundary works best when it describes what you will do, rather than trying to control the other person.
- Time: When you can play, how late you will stay online, and whether you will answer messages outside those times.
- Communication: Whether you are comfortable with game chat, voice, video, private messages, or moving to another app.
- Topics: Which subjects are off limits. You can decline questions about sexuality, sexual experience, relationships, or anything else you do not want to discuss.
- Privacy: What you will keep private, such as your real name, location, school, workplace, phone number, or social accounts.
- Treatment: What you will do if someone insults, pressures, threatens, or repeatedly disrupts you—for example, ending the session or blocking them.
These are ordinary parts of online safety, not tests of whether a friendship is real. The Australian eSafety Commissioner says online friends and contacts should respect your boundaries and not send messages or share content that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe (online gaming guidance).
Say the boundary simply
State the limit in a direct sentence. You can be kind without making it sound negotiable. These are suggested scripts, not quotations from the sources:

- “I like playing with you, but I’m logging off at 10. I won’t be available after that.”
- “I’m happy to talk about the game, but I don’t want to share my real name, location, or school.”
- “I don’t want to discuss that. Let’s switch topics.”
- “I’m not using voice chat tonight; I’ll message in the game.”
- “I’m taking a break from this conversation. I’ll leave the party now.”
If the person asks why, a short repeat is enough: “That doesn’t work for me.” You do not need to debate a privacy choice or disclose more personal information to justify it. eSafety recommends being clear about boundaries, including when someone may contact you and which topics you do not want to discuss (unsafe contact guidance).
Make the limit practical to keep
A boundary is easier to follow when your settings support it. Names and locations of controls vary by game and can change, so check the current settings or help page for the specific game or platform rather than relying on an old menu path.

- Set an end time before a session begins, and let your friend know when you are leaving.
- Use offline, busy, or do-not-disturb status if available; turn off or limit notifications when you need uninterrupted time.
- Restrict messages, invitations, voice chat, or activity visibility to friends or approved contacts where the service allows it.
- Review your friends and contacts list and remove people you no longer want to interact with.
- Keep identifying details and location private, including in profiles, usernames, screenshots, and voice conversations.
- If voice or private messages feel uncomfortable, stay with in-game text or another channel you prefer—or leave the conversation.
There is no universal healthy number of gaming hours. eSafety advises setting limits and making time for screen-free activities; the right plan depends on whether gaming is crowding out sleep, school or work, relationships, or other things that matter to you (eSafety’s gaming guidance; American Academy of Pediatrics parent guidance).
Choose a response based on what is happening
You can decide whether to reply by weighing how harmful the conduct is, whether the person respects a clear request, and whether a direct response feels safe. You are not required to confront someone before using mute, block, or report tools.

If it is a low-risk disagreement
Restate the limit once if you want to, then end that play session if the disagreement continues. A friend may be disappointed; that does not make your boundary unfair.
If they keep pressuring or contacting you
Stop replying if that is the safest or simplest option. Mute or block the account, adjust who can contact you, and report unwanted contact through the game or platform if appropriate. Blocking is a reasonable way to end access, not a punishment you must defend.

If there are threats, bullying, or other serious abuse
Prioritize getting out of the interaction. If safe, keep screenshots, chat logs, or other evidence before content disappears; do not put yourself at risk to collect it. Report the behavior using the service’s tools, and ask someone you trust for help. StopBullying.gov recommends blocking and reporting, taking a break, and telling a trusted adult when a young person experiences cyberbullying in a game (Cyberbullying and Online Gaming, page reviewed November 29, 2024).

If you are under 18
Tell a parent, caregiver, or another trusted adult if someone’s behavior upsets you or seems inappropriate. U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance for children and families advises stopping the game and telling a trusted adult in that situation (Kids and Video Games, January 2025). You do not have to handle persistent or frightening contact alone.

Check whether gaming still fits your life
Notice what happens when you play: whether you are regularly losing sleep, missing school or work, withdrawing from other relationships, or struggling to stop when you planned to. These signs are a reason to adjust your routine and seek support, not a diagnosis by themselves.
Try a defined stopping time, screen-free periods, or a plan with a friend or family member who can help you stick to it. eSafety suggests setting limits and asking someone you trust for support when balancing gaming is difficult (online gaming guidance). If a friendship is enjoyable only when you ignore your needs, it is reasonable to take space or end contact.
