Disable pointer acceleration if you want the same physical movement distance to produce the same on-screen movement. There is no single best DPI or sensitivity: the right combination depends on the game, your movement style, and the room you have to move your mouse.
How DPI and in-game sensitivity work together
DPI is the mouse’s configured movement count: at a higher DPI, the mouse reports more movement for the same physical distance. The game then applies its own sensitivity scale. Both settings affect how quickly your aim moves, so DPI alone does not tell you how fast a given setup will feel.
For comparisons within one game, eDPI is a quick shorthand: multiply mouse DPI by that game’s sensitivity. For example, 800 DPI × 0.35 sensitivity = 280 eDPI in VALORANT. Treat that result as a within-VALORANT comparison, not a universal measurement: another game may use a different sensitivity scale. ProAiming’s VALORANT player settings defines eDPI this way.
Choose a starting point, not a supposed ideal
There is no universally best setting. Logitech G says the ideal configuration depends on the specific game, playstyle, and player’s needs. As one VALORANT starting example, 800 DPI is reasonable, but it is not a rule or a performance guarantee.

A snapshot of 20 VALORANT players on ProAiming, updated September 10, 2026, lists 12 at 800 DPI and five at 1600 DPI, with other values represented as well. Its reported median eDPI is 288, with a range of 160–570. These figures describe that page’s selected players, not all players, and do not establish 288—or any listed setting—as optimal. A May 2025 Esports.net explainer presents 400–800 DPI and 1000 Hz as strong VALORANT starting values. Those conventional suggestions do not conflict with the later snapshot, which includes players at 1600 DPI and polling rates above 1000 Hz: a starting recommendation and a small sample of player configurations answer different questions. Set up DPI and sensitivity step by step
- Select a DPI your mouse can retain. Use the mouse’s software or onboard controls to choose one fixed value. You do not need to match a professional player’s mouse or DPI; reliable saving and a comfortable setup matter more.
- Adjust the game’s sensitivity for your available space. Move the mouse through a comfortable sweep and check whether you can track and turn without running out of pad or desk space. A slower setting needs more hand travel. Pad size, desk height, arm length, and whether you aim mainly with your wrist or arm all affect what feels workable.
- Compare combined settings only within the same game. Multiply DPI by the in-game sensitivity to calculate eDPI when comparing VALORANT setups, for example. Do not use that number to compare settings across different titles.
- Disable unintended acceleration. In Windows, open Mouse Settings → Additional mouse options → Pointer Options and clear Enhance pointer precision. Razer recommends disabling this Windows acceleration setting in its guidance for high-polling devices. Also check the mouse manufacturer’s software for a separate acceleration option. - Check the game’s own input options. Relevant settings vary by title. Razer cites VALORANT’s Raw Input Buffer and Overwatch’s High Precision Mouse Input as examples; do not assume the same option name or recommendation applies to every game. Consult current guidance for the game you play.
- Choose a polling rate your setup handles smoothly. Polling rate is how often the mouse reports its position to the computer. Higher is not automatically better: Razer notes that some older game engines may handle high rates poorly and that some PCs may lack the CPU resources to process 8000 reports per second. If a Razer HyperPolling device causes lag or stutter, Razer advises trying 4000 or 2000 Hz. - Record the setup and keep it steady while evaluating it. Write down DPI, in-game sensitivity, acceleration state, and polling rate. If you decide to adjust, change one variable at a time and practice consistently before judging the result. There is no established universal practice duration that guarantees adaptation.
How to decide between two settings
- Turning distance: Compare how much physical movement a turn takes, or compare eDPI within the same game. The combined DPI and game sensitivity matter more than DPI alone.
- Sweep space: Choose a sensitivity that lets you make the movements you need without hitting the edge of your usable surface. If your current pad limits a comfortable sweep, a larger pad may give you more room; it does not guarantee better aim.
- Repeatability: Keep DPI and sensitivity fixed, and disable acceleration if your goal is for equal physical distances to produce equal movement.
- Smooth operation: Use a polling rate that works with your game and PC. Reduce it if high-rate operation causes lag or stutter.
- Mouse fit and saved settings: An adjustable mouse is useful only if it fits your hand and reliably retains the DPI you choose. A model’s popularity among players does not prove it is the right fit for you.
Why copying a professional’s settings may not work
Player settings can give you a starting point to test, but the same numbers can feel different depending on your game, mouse, movement style, and available space. Even within VALORANT, the player snapshot spans a wide eDPI range and includes different DPI and polling-rate choices. A professional configuration is an example of one player’s setup, not evidence that copying it will improve your performance.
More important for consistency is a stable, workable input path: the mouse retains its DPI, the game sensitivity stays fixed, acceleration is not unintentionally changing movement, and the chosen polling rate runs smoothly on your system.
