Set a flight price alert to spot meaningful fare changes, then use the live itinerary price and your trip constraints—not the alert alone—to decide whether to book. Google Flights can track either a route or a specific flight, but alerts are notifications, not reservations or guarantees that a fare will fall.
How to set a flight price alert in Google Flights
The following steps describe Google’s desktop instructions. If the controls look different on your device, use the corresponding instructions for that device in Google’s flight-tracking help.
- Open Google Flights and search for your route. For a fixed trip, enter your dates; to track one exact option, select the flight you want to follow.
- Turn on Track prices for the route, or turn on tracking for the selected flight. For flexible travel dates, choose Any dates for the route.
- To manage alerts later, open Tracked Flights. There you can turn notification emails off or remove a tracked route or flight.
For an “Any dates” route, Google says it emails you when the route’s minimum price drops significantly over a month. If there is no sufficiently large drop, it sends regular emails with available prices. Google may also notify you when a tracked route is likely to rise or when a fare is about to expire and the replacement fare is likely to cost more. Tracking requires a Google account according to Google’s 2023 product article; because that article is older, confirm the current controls in the live product.
What a fare alert can—and cannot—tell you
An alert is a reason to recheck the fare, not a fare hold. Prices and available seats can change before you book, and Google’s results may not include every available offer. Google says its predictions use past price trends and warns that future prices may not behave as expected. Check the current price, itinerary, and booking conditions with the provider before paying.

Google Flights may show trip-specific tips, a price graph, or a prediction that a price is unlikely to drop or likely to rise when its historical analysis supports a high-confidence signal. Treat those as decision aids rather than promises about your route.
Should you buy today or wait?
Start with how fixed the trip is. If your dates matter or the trip is important, buying early is the safer way to protect the itinerary. If price matters more and your dates can move, compare nearby dates and watch the trip-specific price information before deciding. There is no universal booking window that reliably identifies the cheapest day for every route.

Google’s 2026 U.S. averages by trip type
Google’s Oct. 5, 2026 analysis used five years of aggregated Google Flights data and describes typical historical low points for U.S. departures. These are context, not predictions for an individual itinerary.

Google says the average price drop across the international low-price range was insignificant and advises booking international trips as soon as possible. For Europe, it says the low-price range begins 49 or more days before departure and waiting rarely pays off. These findings come from Google’s analysis of U.S. departures, not a guarantee for travelers elsewhere or for a specific route. Travel dates may matter more than the day you book
In the same Google analysis, booking on Wednesday saved about 1.4% on average compared with booking on Sunday. A Monday departure with a Tuesday or Wednesday return was associated with about 14% lower average fares than weekend flights. These are aggregate comparisons, not savings a traveler can count on for a particular itinerary.

The lowest displayed fare may come with trade-offs. Compare the total price alongside travel time, departure and arrival times, stops, airport changes, and whether a connection requires you to collect bags and check in again on a self-transfer. Also consider whether you prefer booking directly with an airline or through an online agency.

Google says its Best results balance price, convenience, and ease of booking, while Cheapest prioritizes low prices and may include extra agencies or itineraries with trade-offs. Google compares offers from more than 300 travel partners, but says its results may not show all offers. Its 2026 analysis also found nonstop tickets were 20% more expensive on average than tickets with connections; that average does not establish what a connection is worth for your trip.
