The persistent console file also depends on whether your LFS system uses systemd or SysV. First identify the intended national AZERTY variant, then choose a matching map actually available on your installation.
First identify where the layout is wrong
- Virtual text console: Use the console procedure for your init system. This is the Linux text terminal, not an X11 graphical session.
- X11 desktop: Configure the graphical keyboard layout separately; a console map does not set X11.
- Other contexts: The SysV console configuration described by LFS does not configure SSH, a serial console, or X11. Wayland-specific configuration is not covered by the LFS systemd console instructions, so follow the documentation for your compositor or desktop.
A keyboard layout is not a locale. The keymap determines how key presses are interpreted; locale settings control language-sensitive application behavior and character handling.
Choose the right console instructions for your LFS init system
The current LFS 13.0 systemd book uses /etc/vconsole.conf. The LFS 12.4 SysV book instead documents /etc/sysconfig/console. Do not combine the two procedures.
LFS 13.0 with systemd
- Find a valid map name on the installed system. Run
localectl list-keymapsand identify the French, Belgian, or other AZERTY variant you intend to use. The LFS instructions recommend checking this list but do not specify one universal French AZERTY map name; available choices depend on the build. - Set the persistent console map. Edit
/etc/vconsole.confand add a line using the exact map name you verified:KEYMAP=verified-map-name
Replaceverified-map-namewith the actual entry from your system. IfKEYMAPis unset, it defaults tous. - Apply or test the change after boot. Once the LFS system has booted with systemd, run
localectl set-keymap verified-map-nameto change the console map at runtime. LFS notes that this command does not work inside the LFS chroot; run it on the booted target system.
The systemd-vconsole-setup service reads /etc/vconsole.conf for configuration information, as described in the LFS 13.0-systemd console documentation.

LFS 12.4 with SysV init
Follow the SysV book’s console configuration instructions, not the systemd file procedure. In /etc/sysconfig/console, set KEYMAP to the appropriate arguments for loadkeys. Use the keymap name and arguments available on your installation; do not assume a name that has not been verified for your build.
Configure X11 separately
For an X11 graphical session, LFS documents this command form:

localectl set-x11-keymap LAYOUT [MODEL] [VARIANT] [OPTIONS]
Choose layout, model, and variant values supported by the XKB data installed on your system. The documented X11 configuration and parameter listing require the BLFS XKeyboard-Config package. X11 settings do not establish that a Wayland session uses the same configuration.

Check the map and the displayed characters independently
If keys produce the wrong characters, verify that you selected the intended national or regional map rather than merely a layout labeled AZERTY. French, Belgian, and other variants can differ, and the exact installed options are build-dependent.
If the key produces the intended character but it appears as a missing or incorrect glyph, check the console font as a separate issue. A keymap controls interpretation; the font controls which characters the console can display. The LFS 13.0-systemd console page names Lat2-Terminus16.psfu.gz among Kbd fonts with characters used in its C.UTF-8 interactive console output.
