To make a sound card or other audio device the default output, select it in Windows Sound settings. In Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > System > Sound and choose it under Output. In Windows 10, open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound, select the device on the Playback tab, choose Set as Default Device, then click OK.

Choose the right playback device

Windows may list several outputs: built-in speakers, headphones, a USB audio device, or audio routed through an HDMI-connected display. Choose the endpoint physically connected to the speakers or headphones you want to hear. An HDMI display without speakers, for example, may be the wrong output even if it appears in the list. Microsoft notes that selecting an output in Windows 11 also sets it as the default device: Microsoft’s Windows audio troubleshooting guide.

Set the default in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, select the sound card, speakers, or headphones you want to use.

Windows makes the selected output the default for normal system playback. If you prefer the classic playback controls, use the Playback tab instead: open Settings > System > Sound > More sound settings, then select the device on Playback, choose Set as default, and confirm.

Set the default in Windows 10

  1. Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.
  2. On the Playback tab, right-click the desired device and choose Set as Default Device.
  3. Select OK.

These Windows 10 steps are documented by Microsoft Support. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025; the setting may remain available, but the operating system is no longer supported.

SABRENT USB External Stereo Sound Card Adapter, Plug & Play (AU-MMSA)
  • PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
  • WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
  • TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
  • FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
  • SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.

If the sound card or output is missing

A missing device can indicate that Windows has not detected it or that its driver is disabled, outdated, or not loading correctly. Check Device Manager before concluding the hardware needs replacement.

  1. Open Device Manager > Sound, video and game controllers and look for the device. If an enable option is available, enable it.
  2. If it is not listed, show hidden devices and scan for hardware changes.
  3. If Windows still does not detect it, download the driver for your Windows version from the PC or sound-card manufacturer’s support site, install it, and restart.

If the selected device is silent

Changing the default only chooses the playback endpoint; it does not unmute the device, fix a driver, or ensure every app is using the system default. Diagnose the basic system output first, then check the affected app’s own audio controls if other system sounds work.

  • Confirm the output: Check that Windows has selected the device connected to the speakers or headphones you intend to use.
  • Check mute and volume: Make sure the device is not muted and its volume is raised.
  • Check whether the device is enabled: Open its sound properties and verify it is enabled.
  • Try disabling audio enhancements: If the device remains silent, turn enhancements off and test again.
  • Investigate drivers: If these checks do not help, follow the driver checks above.

Microsoft lists output selection, mute state, audio enhancements, and driver problems among possible causes; its troubleshooting steps are in the Windows audio guide and the Windows 10 sound guide.
