To make an Apple Podcasts episode stop after a set time, start playing it, open the playback controls, tap Sleep Timer, and choose one of the options shown. If you prefer a system-wide timer, use the Clock app’s Stop Playing setting instead.
Set a sleep timer in Apple Podcasts
- Open Podcasts on your iPhone and start an episode.
- Open the episode’s playback controls if they are not already visible.
- Tap the Sleep Timer button.
- Choose a timer option from the choices displayed.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide documents this control in its iOS 27 guidance. The guide does not list the exact preset durations, so choose from the options shown in your current player. Apple’s iPhone User Guide.

Use the Clock app if you want a system-wide fallback
Clock can stop audio or video playback when its countdown ends, including playback in another app. Configure this separately from the Podcasts player:

- Open Clock and go to Timers.
- Set the duration you want.
- Tap When Timer Ends.
- Scroll to the bottom of the sound list and tap Stop Playing.
- Tap Set, then tap Start.
The Clock timer continues if you switch to another app or your iPhone goes to sleep. Apple Support: Use the timer in Clock on iPhone.

Which timer should you use?
- Podcasts Sleep Timer: Set it directly in the episode’s playback controls when you want that episode to stop after a selected option.
- Clock’s Stop Playing: Use it when you want a separate countdown that can stop audio or video playback in another app as well.
Sleep Timer is not Sleep Focus or a sleep schedule
The Podcasts Sleep Timer controls playback. Sleep Focus and sleep schedules in Health support bedtime routines and reducing interruptions; they are not the control for stopping a podcast episode. To stop playback after a set time, use the Podcasts timer or Clock’s Stop Playing setting.
