For ScreenshotOne, add reduced_motion=true to the request to emulate the browser’s prefers-reduced-motion: reduce setting. The site then decides how to respond; this does not automatically stop every animation. If you want the API to try to settle or pause supported motion too, use its separate reduce_motion=true option.
Set the reduced-motion preference in ScreenshotOne
Add reduced_motion=true to the ScreenshotOne request URL:
https://api.screenshotone.com/take?reduced_motion=true&url=https://example.com/&access_key=<your access key>
This is the documented request shape, not a credentialed or tested request. ScreenshotOne documents reduced_motion as emulating the CSS media preference prefers-reduced-motion: reduce. The page’s own code determines whether it simplifies or disables motion, or ignores the preference. The option does not itself pause animations, videos, or carousels. ScreenshotOne’s option documentation
Choose between preference emulation and active motion reduction
| Option | What it does | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
reduced_motion=true |
Emulates prefers-reduced-motion: reduce; the site decides how to respond. |
You are checking how a visitor’s reduced-motion preference affects the page. |
reduce_motion=true |
Enables the preference and additionally attempts to intervene before capture: finish finite CSS and Web Animations effects, pause looping animation and native media, and stop autoplay in supported animation libraries or sliders. | You want supported motion settled or paused for the screenshot. |
ScreenshotOne describes active reduction as best-effort. Custom JavaScript, canvas animation, and animated images may continue moving, so neither setting guarantees a motionless or pixel-identical result. The vendor recommends not setting both options: reduce_motion already includes the preference. These behaviors are documented by ScreenshotOne, not independently tested here. Other ways to emulate reduced motion
The CSS media feature is prefers-reduced-motion; its reduced value is reduce. The right route depends on whether you need a hosted capture, automated test, command-line capture, or manual browser inspection.
| Route | How to enable it | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| ScreenshotNeo hosted screenshot API | ScreenshotNeo’s documented feature set does not state a dedicated reduced-motion parameter. Its API supports custom JavaScript and CSS, which can provide a project-specific workaround, but that is not equivalent to a documented preference-emulation switch. See its API documentation. | Do not assume a parameter from another provider works unchanged unless confirmed in the relevant API documentation. |
| Playwright Test | Set use: { reducedMotion: 'reduce' }. The option accepts reduce or no-preference and was added in Playwright v1.50. The related page-level API is emulateMedia. Playwright Test options |
This emulates the preference; page behavior remains dependent on the site. |
| shot-scraper | Its version 1.4 documentation lists the --reduced-motion option. shot-scraper 1.4 API documentation |
Use the versioned documentation for the CLI option. |
| Chrome DevTools | Open the Rendering tool and choose prefers-reduced-motion: reduce under CSS media-feature emulation. Chrome DevTools: Rendering |
This is manual inspection, rather than an API request setting. |
| Microsoft Edge DevTools | Use the Rendering tool’s reduced-motion emulation. Microsoft Edge Rendering tool | Microsoft notes that some other animations in its demonstration remain active; inspect the actual page rather than treating preference emulation as a universal freeze switch. |
Why a server client hint is not the default
MDN documents a server-rendering route using the Sec-CH-Prefers-Reduced-Motion client hint, negotiated with Accept-CH, with cache behavior such as Vary to consider. MDN marks the hint experimental and not broadly available, so it is a compatibility-sensitive possibility rather than the usual way to configure a screenshot API. MDN: Sec-CH-Prefers-Reduced-Motion

Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its documented features do not include a named reduced-motion preference parameter; the call below requests a screenshot, not reduced-motion emulation. For a site-specific workaround, ScreenshotNeo also supports custom CSS and JavaScript, but verify the behavior you need on the target page.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. The API can accept cookie and consent banners and remove 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to AI clients including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Free includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. All features are on every plan. ScreenshotNeo

Troubleshooting reduced-motion captures
- The page still animates: With
reduced_motion=true, the site may not implement the preference or may handle only some motion. If using ScreenshotOne and supported motion should be settled or paused, tryreduce_motion=true; its intervention is best-effort. - The screenshot differs from what a visitor sees: Confirm whether you intended to emulate the visitor preference or actively reduce supported motion. Active reduction changes more than the media preference alone.
- A setting appears to have no effect in another API: Parameter names are provider-specific. Use that provider’s documentation; do not assume ScreenshotOne’s option names apply elsewhere.
- Server-rendered content does not reflect the setting: A client hint requires browser/server negotiation and cache handling, and the relevant hint is experimental with limited availability according to MDN.
- One element keeps moving despite DevTools emulation: Inspect the page’s implementation and animation type; preference emulation does not promise that every custom script, canvas, or animated asset will stop.

Does reduced-motion emulation guarantee a motionless screenshot?
No. Emulation communicates a preference; the site determines its response. Even active intervention is not guaranteed to stop every custom or unsupported animation.
