Start by keeping your child’s device volume below 60% of its maximum, then enable and lock a device-level volume limit if one is available. The 60% figure is a practical rule of thumb—not a measured decibel level or a guarantee of safety. Actual sound exposure also depends on the headphones, fit, audio content and listening time.
Start with a conservative volume and listening time
The World Health Organization (WHO) advises teaching children to keep device volume below 60% of maximum. Use this as a starting point, not as proof that a particular headphone setup is safe: the same percentage can produce different sound levels on different devices and headphones. Volume and duration work together. WHO gives 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week and 90 dB for four hours a week as illustrative safe-listening exposure examples. The WHO-ITU standard’s child reference mode is 75 dB for 40 hours a week. These are sound-level-and-time references, not conversions from a phone’s volume percentage or individualized medical advice. - Keep listening below the device’s maximum and avoid prolonged listening at elevated volume.
- Build in quiet breaks rather than leaving headphones on continuously.
- If your child needs to turn the sound up to hear clearly, check the fit and listening environment before raising the level.
Set a limit on an iPhone
On iPhone, Apple’s headphone safety setting lets you set a decibel ceiling. Menu labels or availability may vary with software version and region. Apple’s iPhone guide

- Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Headphone Safety.
- Turn on Reduce Loud Audio.
- Set the decibel slider to the ceiling you want the phone to enforce. Apple’s cited guide does not establish one universal target value for every child.
- If the iPhone is set up for a child through Family Sharing, use Screen Time family restrictions to prevent changes to the Reduce Loud Audio level. Apple says this control can be restricted.
A ceiling is most useful when the parent chooses it and the child cannot casually raise it. The WHO-ITU device standard also recommends password-protected parental volume control. WHO-ITU standard
For Android and other devices, check the exact model
Volume-limit menus and parental controls differ among device makers, operating-system versions and headphone connections. There is no single Android-wide path established here, so do not assume that a setting on one phone applies to another. Check the manufacturer’s current official help for the child’s specific device and audio route, and confirm that the limit remains in effect with the headphones they actually use.

Consider a headphone-level limiter as an extra safeguard
Some children’s headphones include sound limiting or parental loudness control. Health Canada describes sound-limiting headphones as one hearing-protection option and notes that many manufacturers make children’s headphones intended to limit sound reaching the ear. Features vary by model, so check the product’s specifications rather than relying on a “kids” label. Health Canada hearing-protection guidance
A headphone limiter can complement a device setting, but neither should be treated as a safety guarantee. Check whether the control can be locked, whether it applies to the device and connection your child uses, and whether it limits output rather than merely displaying a volume level. Make it easier to listen at a lower level
Well-fitting headphones and noise-cancelling headphones can reduce the need to raise volume in noisy surroundings, according to WHO. They do not replace a sensible volume limit or breaks. If headphones fit poorly or background noise is overwhelming, move to a quieter place or adjust the fit before increasing the volume. WHO safe-listening guidance
Know when to seek hearing advice
Persistent ringing, difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds or trouble following conversation can be warning signs of hearing problems, according to WHO. If your child experiences these symptoms, contact a hearing professional. WHO safe-listening guidance

Why the limit matters
The WHO-ITU standard introduced a child listening mode set around 75 dB for 40 hours per week, alongside features such as exposure tracking and parental controls. That is a standardized reference mode, not a promise that every device or headphone will deliver the same acoustic output. WHO-ITU standard
WHO reported in 2019 that 466 million people, including 34 million children, had disabling hearing loss, and projected that more than 900 million people would have disabling hearing loss by 2050.
