Use an elevated terminal to change a Dev Drive’s trust state: run fsutil devdrv trust D: to mark drive D: trusted, or fsutil devdrv untrust D: to mark it untrusted. Replace D: with the drive’s actual letter, then verify the setting with fsutil devdrv query D:.
Change a Dev Drive’s trust state

Open Start, search for PowerShell or Command Prompt, right-click the result, and select Run as administrator. Changing the trust designation requires elevation.

To trust the Dev Drive, run
fsutil devdrv trust D:, replacingD:with its drive letter. -
To make the Dev Drive untrusted, run

Confirm the state by running
fsutil devdrv query D:. The query reports whether the volume is a Dev Drive, whether it is trusted, and information about its allowed and attached filters.
Microsoft documents these commands in its fsutil devdrv reference and its Windows 11 Dev Drive setup guide.

What trusted and untrusted mean
Trust is a declaration that you have high confidence in the security of the content stored on the Dev Drive. When the drive is trusted and Microsoft Defender real-time protection is enabled, Defender can use performance mode: it defers scans until after a file-open operation. On an untrusted Dev Drive, real-time protection scans synchronously.
This changes scanning behavior; it does not turn off antivirus protection. Microsoft’s Dev Drive performance-mode guidance says performance mode requires both a trusted Dev Drive and real-time protection enabled.

Check Defender’s Dev Drive protection status

Open Windows Security.

Go to Virus & threat protection > Manage settings.

Inspect the Dev Drive protection section or select See volumes to review performance-mode status for the volume.
Trust is not the same as creating a Dev Drive
Changing a volume’s trust state does not convert an ordinary drive into a Dev Drive. Microsoft says the Dev Drive designation is set when the volume is created or formatted; an existing ordinary volume cannot be converted simply by marking it trusted. Trust can be changed afterward on a volume that is already a Dev Drive.

Keep antivirus filters attached
Trust status and antivirus-filter attachment are separate settings. Microsoft warns that detaching antivirus filters leaves the drive without standard security scans and creates a security risk. Do not remove those filters merely to change the trust state; Microsoft recommends the default performance-mode setting for a trusted Dev Drive.

On Business or Enterprise devices, organization policy may control Dev Drive availability and whether local administrators can attach or detach filters. Policy may also require antivirus filters to remain attached. If the command is unavailable or the relevant controls are managed, ask your organization’s administrator to check the applied settings. Microsoft describes these controls in its Dev Drive enterprise policy guidance.
