To keep one printer as the default in Windows 11, turn off automatic printer management, select the installed printer, and choose Set as default. Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners; Windows uses the selected printer when an app does not choose another one.
The procedure is the same in supported Windows 11 versions. Microsoft lists version 25H2 as the current general-availability feature version for existing PCs; version 26H1 is intended for new devices and is not an in-place feature update from 24H2 or 25H2.
Set a fixed default printer in Windows 11
- Open Start and select Settings. You can also press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices, then Printers & scanners.
- Under Printer preferences, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer.
- Select the installed printer you want to use.
- Select Set as default. On the current Windows 11 interface, this control appears on the selected printer’s page; selecting Manage first describes an older layout.
The printer’s status should change to Default. The Set as default button is unavailable while automatic management is on. Microsoft’s default printer instructions show the current path.
What “Let Windows manage my default printer” does
When this option is on, Windows can make the last printer you used the default. On mobile Windows devices, the default can also change when the device’s location changes, selecting the last printer used at the new location.

This behavior can be useful if you regularly move between printers. Turn automatic management off if you want one printer to remain the default.
Add the printer if it is missing
You must install a printer before you can set it as the default. To add one:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device next to Add a printer or scanner.
- Wait for Windows to find the printer, then select it.
- Select Add device.
For a wireless printer, connect the printer and PC to the same wireless network. Discovery can take several minutes. If Windows does not find it, check that the printer is on and connected, then try again. Microsoft’s printer installation guide notes that some manufacturer installers may not work correctly on ARM-based PCs; use Windows’ built-in add process where possible.
Check which printer you are selecting
Printer lists can contain several similar entries. A physical printer may appear alongside software printers or duplicate queues, such as:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Microsoft Print to PDF
- Microsoft XPS Document Writer
- A duplicate queue created after reinstalling a printer or by printer software
- A network or Universal Print queue with a similar name
Select the exact queue you want applications to use. Setting Microsoft Print to PDF as the default sends print jobs to a PDF file rather than a physical printer. Microsoft documents duplicate Universal Print queues after some Windows 11 updates, including an issue associated with version 22H2; its Universal Print known issues page describes removing the duplicate queues and reinstalling the printer as a remedy.

Use automatic default-printer selection instead
If you want Windows to choose the last printer used, leave automatic management enabled:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Go to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Under Printer preferences, turn on Let Windows manage my default printer.
With this setting enabled, Windows may change the default. Do not use it if you need a particular printer to remain the default.
What the default printer changes
The default printer is the one Windows supplies when an application does not specify a printer. It does not force every application to use that printer: a print dialog can select another installed printer, and some apps remember their own last-used printer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChanging the default does not repair a printer that is offline, disconnected, blocked by a stuck queue, missing a driver, or affected by a stopped Print Spooler service. These require separate troubleshooting. See Microsoft’s offline printer troubleshooting guide.
Fix common default-printer problems
“Set as default” is missing
Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and turn off Let Windows manage my default printer. Return to the printer’s page; the button should be available.

Windows keeps changing the default
This usually means automatic printer management is enabled. Turn it off, select the intended printer, and select Set as default. If the setting is already off and the default still changes, check whether an app or printer-management utility is changing the selected queue.
The printer is listed but does not print
- Check the printer’s power, cable, or network connection.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and select the printer.
- Select Open print queue.
- Cancel stuck jobs and try printing again.
- If the queue remains blocked, open the Services app and restart Print Spooler.
Windows 11 can also run the printer troubleshooter through the Get Help app. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps.

Paper size is wrong
For Universal Print and other IPP printers, before Windows 11 version 24H2, Windows could select Letter or A4 based on regional settings instead of the printer or connector’s configured default. Version 24H2 and newer use improved behavior, but Universal Print pull-print and connector setups have additional rules. This is a paper-size configuration issue, not a different method for setting the default printer. See Microsoft’s Universal Print known issues.
Set the default printer from Command Prompt
For administrative scripts or quick local changes, Windows includes the older PrintUI command:

Microsoft documents /y as setting the printer being installed as the default. This is an older administrative interface; the Settings method is preferable for most users because it makes the selected queue and automatic-management setting visible. See Microsoft’s PrintUI documentation.
There is no standard documented Set-Printer -Default PowerShell parameter. The Set-Printer cmdlet changes printer configuration but does not provide that default-printer switch; see its documented syntax. For software, Microsoft provides the Win32 SetDefaultPrinter function. It changes the default for the current user on the local computer and requires a valid printer, driver, and port; a shared printer can be specified by its UNC name. FAQ
Why can’t I see “Set as default” in Windows 11?
Turn off Let Windows manage my default printer under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. The manual button is unavailable while automatic management is on.
Why does Windows 11 keep selecting a different printer?
Automatic printer management is probably enabled. Disable it, select the intended printer, and choose Set as default. Otherwise, Windows may select the last printer used.
Can I set a printer as default if it is not listed?
No. Add it first from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device. A wireless printer and PC should normally be on the same network.
Does the default printer override an app’s printer choice?
No. It is the automatic choice when an application does not specify a printer. A print dialog can still select another installed printer.
Will changing the default printer fix an offline printer?
No. Offline status, connection failures, stuck print jobs, driver problems, and Print Spooler failures require separate troubleshooting.
The Bottom Line
For a printer that should remain selected, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, turn off Let Windows manage my default printer, select the installed printer, and choose Set as default. If Windows should choose based on recent use, leave automatic management on instead.
