Secure your Steam account by enabling Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator, protecting your email and recovery details, and refusing to share passwords or verification codes. If someone takes over the account, secure your computer and email before resetting the Steam password. For an unfamiliar charge, contact Steam through its official support process; never give Support your full card number, expiration date, or CVV.
Enable Steam Guard and prepare recovery options
Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator is part of the Steam Mobile app and adds a sign-in verification step. Its code changes every 30 seconds and can be used once. You can also approve a sign-in in the app or scan Steam’s sign-in QR code; check the sign-in details shown before approving. See Steam Support’s Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator guidance.

Add a phone number to your account so SMS can help you reset a password or transfer the authenticator. Steam says a phone number can be associated with one Steam account at a time. Keep the recovery options and codes private: Steam recommends printing backup codes rather than storing them on a computer or taking a screenshot. Never share Steam Guard codes, SMS recovery codes, or authenticator codes. Steam says its Support team and Valve employees will not ask for your password or mobile authenticator code.
Choose a sign-in method you can verify
- Enter a code: Use the current code displayed in the Steam Mobile app when prompted to sign in.
- Approve a notification: Review the sign-in details in the app before confirming; do not approve a request you did not initiate.
- Scan a QR code: Use the Steam app’s scanner for Steam’s sign-in QR code, and verify the displayed details before approval.
When changing phones, transfer the authenticator if possible. Steam says a transfer causes a two-day restriction on trading and the Community Market. Removing the authenticator instead causes a 15-day restriction on trading or selling items. These are inventory restrictions, not payment-card protections.

Protect your password from phishing
Use a strong, unique password and enable two-factor authentication. Also follow your email provider’s security recommendations, because access to the associated email can undermine Steam account recovery. Steam’s Account Security Recommendations advise users to be cautious with links and credential requests.
Do not sign in through a suspicious link, even if it came from a friend: their account may have been compromised. Steam warns that phishing pages can impersonate Steam or gaming sites. Steam Support does not use the Friends network to contact users, and it does not request CD keys or credit-card purchase information unless you have contacted Support through its system. Steam’s direct warning is: “Steam Support will never ask for your password.” Enter your password only on official Steam websites; Steam gives steampowered.com and steamcommunity.com as examples. Recover a stolen Steam account safely
Do not immediately reset the Steam password from a device that may be infected, or while the associated email account remains compromised. Steam’s recommended order is to check and secure the device and email first, then recover Steam access.
- Scan the computer. Check for viruses, keyloggers, spyware, or other malicious code and remove any threats before changing your Steam password.
- Secure the associated email account. Change its password and follow the provider’s security steps. A hijacker with email access may regain Steam access or interfere with support.
- Start Steam recovery. Go to the Steam Help login and recovery page and follow the account-recovery prompts to change the Steam password.
- Contact Support if automated recovery fails. Use the Support contact form presented during recovery and provide as much proof of ownership as you can.

Respond to an unfamiliar Steam charge
First check whether a household member or anyone else with access to the payment method made the purchase. If the charge remains unexplained, use Steam’s official Unrecognized Charges support flow. For a PayPal statement charge, Steam directs users to retrieve the invoice ID from PayPal for Support.
Steam Support says it will never request your full credit-card number, expiration date, or CVV. Do not send those details in a support message or share them in a public comment. Provide only the information Steam requests through its official support process, without exposing complete payment credentials.

Keep the security steps working over time
- Keep access to your recovery phone number current, and store backup codes somewhere other people cannot access.
- Protect the email account linked to Steam with a strong password and the security measures recommended by its provider.
- Before acting on a message about your account, verify the request by going to Steam’s official site or app directly.
- When changing devices, plan for authenticator transfer and its possible inventory restrictions rather than disabling protection casually.
