To secure your phone, keep its software current, lock it with a strong passcode, protect key accounts with multifactor authentication (MFA), limit app access, and prepare for loss with backups and remote-wipe settings. These steps matter because a phone brings communication, account access, authentication prompts, location data, and personal information into a portable device that is often connected and can be lost.

Why is mobile security important?

A compromised or lost phone can expose more than the device itself: it may provide access to accounts, credentials, private information, or money. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) summarizes the risk in its Mobile Device Cybersecurity Checklist for Consumers (November 2021): “Every connection is a potential point of attack.” That includes the apps, networks, links, and accessories a phone uses—not just its cellular connection.

CISA’s 2021 checklist cited an estimate of 294 million smartphone users in the United States, attributed to Statista’s 2018–2025 estimate series. That is dated context, not a current user count. The practical point remains that phones hold valuable information and deserve routine security attention; it does not mean every phone is compromised.

How do I secure my phone? Start with these six steps

1. Turn on automatic system and app updates

Enable automatic operating-system updates and app updates where your device offers them. Updates fix known flaws and keep security protections current. If your phone no longer receives security updates, the level of protection available may be limited; check the manufacturer’s support information for your exact model rather than assuming all phones of a brand have the same support period.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

2. Lock the phone and strengthen important accounts

Set a strong screen-lock passcode or PIN, choose a short automatic-lock interval, and use fingerprint or face recognition if it suits your circumstances. A screen lock reduces the chance that someone who picks up your phone can immediately access its contents, but it does not replace account-level protection.

Turn on MFA for important accounts that support it, especially email, financial, and primary identity accounts. CISA’s multifactor authentication guidance ranks physical security keys highest among the methods it compares, followed by authenticator-app number matching and authenticator one-time codes; it characterizes SMS or email codes as the weakest listed option. No method is unhackable, and the strongest practical choice is one your account supports and you can recover if a device is lost.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

A physical security key plugs into or taps a device, but the right key depends on the phone’s connector and platform, the account’s supported methods, and your recovery options. Before buying one, verify all three with the relevant vendors. A key adds account protection; it does not replace updates, a screen lock, cautious app use, or backups.

3. Reduce the access apps receive

Install apps from official, curated app stores, but do not treat store screening as a guarantee that every app is safe. Remove apps you no longer use, review location access, share as little personal information as practical, and grant only the permissions an app needs for its function. Revisit permissions when an app’s purpose changes or you stop using it.

4. Be cautious with links, attachments, and networks

Before opening a link or attachment, check that the message and request are legitimate—especially if it is unexpected or landed in a spam folder. Avoid sensitive activity on unfamiliar or unsecured public Wi-Fi. Turn off wireless connections you do not need when practical. A VPN is not a substitute for careful account, link, and network habits.

5. Encrypt, back up, and prepare for loss

Use your phone’s encryption protections and keep backups on an external drive or a properly vetted cloud service. Store recovery keys securely so a backup does not become inaccessible when you need it. Enable the built-in lost-device finding and remote-wipe features before the phone goes missing. Remote wipe can protect information, but it may erase data that has not been backed up. CISA’s consumer checklist also suggests automatic wiping after a configured number of incorrect unlock attempts as one possible measure; it is not a universal requirement.

6. Use trusted charging accessories

Choose reputable chargers and cables you recognize, and avoid unfamiliar USB ports or cables when a safer charging option is available. CISA warns that a malicious charger or computer may load malware and potentially compromise a phone. Treat this as a reason to choose trusted accessories, not as a claim that ordinary public charging automatically infects devices.

What should I do if my phone is lost?

  1. Use the device-finding service: From a trusted device, locate or lock the missing phone using the platform’s built-in lost-device service, if enabled.
  2. Decide whether to erase it: If recovery seems unlikely or sensitive information is at risk, use remote wipe. Consider first whether important data is backed up, because wiping may permanently remove anything that is not.
  3. Protect exposed accounts: Change passwords and revoke sessions for important accounts if you believe someone could access them. Contact your mobile carrier if the phone or SIM could be used to receive account codes.
  4. Restore carefully: After replacing the device, install system and app updates, restore from a trusted backup, and review account recovery methods and app permissions.

What should organizations do about work phones and BYOD?

Consumer settings are useful, but they do not by themselves meet every organization’s security needs. NIST’s SP 800-124 Rev. 2: Guidelines for Managing the Security of Mobile Devices in the Enterprise (May 17, 2023) addresses mobile security across deployment, use, and disposal, including organization-provided and personally owned devices.

Organizations should define which devices may access work systems, which controls apply to personally owned devices used for work (BYOD), how device management and endpoint protection are applied, and what happens when a device is lost or an employee leaves. Policies should also account for protecting personal data on BYOD devices when an organization restricts or wipes work access. NIST’s guidance provides implementation detail for enterprise programs.
