Secure the sign-in credential, end active sessions, revoke exposed API keys, preserve evidence, and report the activity. Add multi-factor authentication (MFA) after containment: turning it on does not end sessions that are already signed in.
What to do first if you see unrecognized activity
Work through these steps in order. If you cannot use a control—for example, because your account uses organizational single sign-on—move on to the relevant support or administrator route rather than delaying other containment steps.
- Secure the credential used to sign in. If you use an OpenAI password and it may have been exposed, reused, or shared, reset it to a unique password. If you sign in with Google or Microsoft, change the password for that provider account instead; an OpenAI password reset does not secure a federated credential. - Log out of all OpenAI sessions. In ChatGPT, open Settings > Security (or Security and login) > Active sessions > Log out of all sessions, then confirm. The current session will also end. OpenAI says other ChatGPT sessions may take up to 30 minutes to be logged out, so do not treat the control as instantaneous. Follow OpenAI’s active-session instructions.
- Revoke potentially exposed API keys. If you use the API and a key may have been exposed, delete that key; changing your ChatGPT password does not revoke it. Review API usage for activity you do not recognize, and retain the relevant usage details. OpenAI recommends keeping keys out of source code and using environment variables or GitHub secrets.
- Review security history and save evidence. Check the event type and time, device, and location. Record details about activity you did not perform or authorize. OpenAI notes that some session details may be approximate or unavailable, so an unfamiliar location alone may not establish who signed in.
- Contact OpenAI Support. Start a new chat from a Help Center page and provide the suspicious activity details. For suspected fraud, use OpenAI’s fraud or suspicious-activity reporting guidance and select the option for unauthorized activity involving your account.
- After containment, enable MFA. Add an available second sign-in method once you have ended sessions and handled exposed credentials. MFA is a preventive measure, not a way to terminate existing logins.
What to check in ChatGPT sessions
The Active sessions page is useful, but it is not a complete inventory of every place your account may be active. OpenAI says it excludes third-party app sessions, connected apps, Sign in with ChatGPT sessions used only for third-party services, and Codex CLI sessions. One browser entry may represent sessions across multiple first-party OpenAI products.
The page is unavailable for accounts linked to organizational SSO, including SAML or OIDC sign-in. If you do not see the setting, contact your organization’s administrator and OpenAI Support as appropriate. Do not assume the absence of the control means your account is safe or that you have overlooked a setting.

If you use the OpenAI API
Handle API credentials separately from ChatGPT sessions. A potentially exposed key can be used for API activity and may lead to charges. Delete the affected key, inspect usage for unfamiliar requests or costs, and include relevant details when contacting support. Keep separate keys for different features, teams, products, or projects so you can isolate and replace a credential without disrupting unrelated work.
OpenAI says it disables a key when it detects that key on the public internet or leaked inside an app-store app. That detection does not cover every possible exposure, so a suspected leak still calls for immediate deletion and a usage review.

Choose an MFA method you can recover
OpenAI’s available methods can vary by device, country, account tier, and how the account was created. Options described in its documentation include authenticator apps, push notifications, text message or WhatsApp, and passkeys. Check the methods actually offered in your account; do not assume every option is available to every user. See OpenAI’s MFA setup and recovery guidance.
- Authenticator apps and push notifications: These add a sign-in step through an app or device. Make sure you can still access the device and understand the account’s recovery route.
- Text message or WhatsApp: These can be convenient where offered, but depend on access to the relevant phone number and service.
- Passkeys or hardware security keys: These can provide a device-based sign-in option. Verify that your device and account support the method, and keep a suitable backup sign-in method.
Use a unique password and consider a password manager to generate and store it. For an optional physical option, a FIDO-compatible hardware security key may suit your setup; verify its connector and current OpenAI account support. A key does not end a compromised session, revoke an API key, or replace reporting suspicious activity.

Consider Advanced Account Security only if its recovery trade-offs fit
Eligible consumer ChatGPT accounts can consider Advanced Account Security. OpenAI says it requires passkeys or security keys, disables password sign-in and email/SMS sign-in codes, disables email account recovery, enables email login notifications, and shortens active-session duration. Because email recovery is disabled, save the recovery keys and maintain at least two secure sign-in methods, including one that works across devices, before relying on it. It is unavailable to ChatGPT Enterprise users, enterprise-managed accounts, and accounts associated with an enterprise-managed domain. Review OpenAI’s Advanced Account Security details before enrolling.
