Reduce the information and account access an attacker could exploit: review what you share publicly, secure important accounts with unique passwords and multifactor authentication (MFA), and protect your mobile-carrier account. These steps can lower risk, but they cannot guarantee that someone will not make a malicious false report to emergency services. Swatting is not the victim’s fault.
How can personal information make swatting easier?
Swatting is a malicious false report to emergency services, often intended to provoke a forceful response. Publicly available details can help an attacker identify or impersonate someone, and information exposed online may also help with account-recovery questions. The FBI warns that seemingly ordinary images and videos can be exploited or manipulated.
Review what strangers can see
- Check public profiles, old posts, photos, videos, and shared content for identifying details such as your address, phone number, routines, or household information.
- Remove or restrict sensitive material where possible, and think carefully before posting content that could reveal where you live or who lives with you.
- Consider resources that help remove sensitive information from public sites. Treat them as a limited measure: removal may not be complete, and it cannot guarantee protection from targeting.
The FBI’s 2025 swatting alert discusses exposure review, caution with images and videos, and removal resources.
How do I secure my accounts and connected devices?
Start with accounts that could expose or reset access to others, then secure connected devices such as smart-home equipment. The FBI recommends strong, unique passwords and MFA on devices and accounts, including smart devices. The FTC suggests prioritizing email, financial accounts, social media, and payment services.

Use unique passwords and enable MFA
- Protect your primary email first. Use a strong, unique password or passphrase; email is often central to password resets for other accounts.
- Secure financial, social-media, and payment accounts. Give each a different password. A reputable password manager can help you create and keep track of unique credentials.
- Turn on MFA wherever it is offered. MFA requires another credential in addition to your password. Keep recovery methods current and protect them as carefully as the account itself.
- Secure connected devices and their accounts. Change default or reused credentials, enable MFA when supported, and install device and app updates.
- Be cautious with unexpected requests. Do not provide personal information in response to unsolicited messages or links; use the service’s official app or website to check an account notice.
The FBI’s online safety guidance also recommends unique passphrases, password managers, MFA, caution with requests for personal information, and regular updates. For smart-device-specific advice, see the FBI Phoenix guidance on protecting smart devices from swatting.
Choose an MFA method your account supports
Authenticator apps and hardware security keys are preferable to SMS codes where the account supports them, because SMS can be exposed in a SIM swap. A security key is optional and only works with compatible accounts. No MFA method prevents someone from making a malicious emergency call.

| Authenticator app | More resistant to SIM swapping than text messages; you need access to the app or its recovery method. |
| Hardware security key | Can provide strong protection on compatible accounts; keep a safe recovery option in case the key is lost. |
| SMS or email code | Better than no second factor when it is the only option, but SMS can be at risk in a SIM swap and email codes depend on the security of the email account. |

Can a SIM swap let someone take over my accounts?
Yes. In a SIM swap, an attacker gains control of your phone number and may receive SMS verification codes or password-reset messages sent to it. This is one reason not to rely on text-message MFA when an account offers a stronger alternative.

- Set a PIN or password on your mobile-carrier account.
- Limit public personal details that could help someone answer security or account-recovery questions.
- Use an authenticator app or security key instead of SMS where available.
- If you suspect a SIM swap, contact your carrier immediately to regain control of your number. Then change passwords for affected accounts and check financial accounts for unauthorized activity.
These steps follow the FTC’s advice on SIM swap scams and account protection.
What should my household plan for?
Talk with household members about swatting before an emergency happens. Agree on how to respond if officers arrive, and make sure everyone understands that the priority during an encounter is to stay calm and cooperate with responding law enforcement. The FBI’s swatting alert recommends household planning as part of prevention.

What should I do if police arrive because of a swatting call?
The FBI says: “In the event you are the victim of a swatting attack, stay calm, and listen to and cooperate with responding law enforcement.” Follow officers’ instructions and avoid sudden actions that could be misunderstood.
After the immediate danger has passed
- Preserve relevant information. Keep usernames, email addresses, websites, platform names, and any related photos or videos. Avoid deleting material that may help investigators.
- Report the incident to local law enforcement. Keep any report details or case number you receive.
- For a US emergency or immediate threat to life, call 911. For leads, threats, or criminal activity, the FBI alert lists tips.fbi.gov, 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324), and local FBI field offices. These channels are US-specific; readers elsewhere should use local emergency and law-enforcement services.
