Secure your home Wi-Fi by updating the router, replacing default passwords, choosing WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, disabling unneeded access features, and separating visitors and smart-home devices from your main network where possible. Start with the router: household devices connect through it, so its settings affect the whole home.

Quick home Wi-Fi security checklist

  • Install available router firmware updates and enable automatic updates if supported.
  • Set a unique administrator password and a different, strong Wi-Fi password.
  • Use WPA3 Personal when available; use WPA2 Personal if WPA3 is unavailable or older devices need it.
  • Turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP if you do not need them.
  • Use a guest network for visitors and, if supported, a separate network for smart-home devices.
  • Confirm the router firewall is enabled; update connected devices and sign out of the router administrator account when finished.

Router menus and update methods vary by manufacturer and internet provider. Use your router’s instructions or contact your ISP for the exact controls rather than relying on a universal menu path.

Secure the router in a safe order

1. Update the router firmware

Check the manufacturer’s or ISP’s instructions for firmware updates. Install any available update before changing settings, and switch on automatic updates if the router supports them. The FTC also recommends keeping connected-device software current. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance

2. Replace the administrator and Wi-Fi passwords

The administrator password controls access to router settings; the Wi-Fi password controls who can join the network. Change both, and do not reuse one for the other. Avoid easily guessed factory defaults. For WPA2 passphrases, CISA’s 2024 federal telework guidance relays Secure Our World’s recommendation of at least 16 characters, using randomized mixed-case letters, numbers, and special characters, or a memorable passphrase made of unrelated words. • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.

Choose a Wi-Fi network name that does not reveal your name, home address, or router brand. A less identifying name does not replace a strong password, but it avoids broadcasting those details in the network list.

3. Choose the strongest compatible Wi-Fi encryption

Select WPA3 Personal when the router and your devices support it. If WPA3 is not available or some older devices cannot connect, use WPA2 Personal. The FTC says WPA3 is the newer and best encryption available and that WPA2 Personal also works to scramble information. Avoid WEP or WPA; if an update leaves an older router offering only those options, consider replacing it. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

4. Turn off features you do not use

Review remote management, Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS), and Universal Plug and Play (UPnP). The FTC recommends turning these off because they can weaken security. If a device or service in your home depends on one, consult its instructions before disabling it; do not leave a feature enabled simply because its purpose is unclear. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance

5. Separate visitors and smart-home devices

Give visitors access through the router’s guest network rather than sharing the password for your main network. Where your router supports it, put internet-connected devices such as TVs, streaming devices, watches, and other smart-home equipment on a separate IoT network. That limits how directly those devices share a network with primary computers and phones. The NSA’s 2023 home-network guidance calls for at least primary, guest, and IoT network segments; the options and isolation behavior available depend on the router. 6. Confirm the firewall is enabled

Check the router settings or its documentation to verify that its firewall is on. If the control is not visible, ask the manufacturer or ISP how the firewall is managed for your model and service. The FTC includes checking the router firewall among its home Wi-Fi recommendations. FTC home Wi-Fi guidance

7. Update connected devices and sign out

Make a list of the devices connected to your home network and install their available software updates. The FTC recommends updating internet-connected devices at home as well as the router. When you finish configuring the router, log out of its administrator account. FTC connected-device guidance

Should you make a separate network for smart-home devices?

Yes, when your router offers a separate IoT network or a guest network that isolates connected devices from the main network. Keep your everyday computers and phones on the primary network, give visitors guest access, and place smart-home devices on the IoT segment when available. The important distinction is that router features vary: check the documentation to see whether the guest network isolates devices and whether an IoT network is provided. If there is no separate IoT option, a guest network may be a practical alternative if it works with the device and provides the separation you need.

When should you replace an old router?

First check for firmware updates and available security settings. Replacement is worth considering if, after updating, the router offers only WEP or WPA rather than WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal. A replacement should suit your ISP and household devices, cover the size and layout of your home, document how firmware updates are delivered, and support WPA3 Personal (with WPA2 Personal if needed for older devices). Guest and IoT network separation are useful capabilities to compare. No specific router model is endorsed here.
