To secure an Epic Games account with two-factor authentication (2FA), sign in, open Account > Password and security, and select Set up beside a 2FA method. Complete its verification, then check that it appears as active. Epic recommends an authenticator app as its strongest listed protection; save the backup codes it provides so you have a recovery option if you lose access to your device.
How to enable 2FA on an Epic Games account
- Sign in to your Epic Games account and open Password and security.
- Find Two-Factor Authentication and select Set up beside the method you want to enable. Epic’s interface can vary, so use those labels as your wayfinding cues.
- Complete the method’s challenge: enter the code sent by email or SMS, enter the code from an authenticator app, or approve the number-match prompt in Epic Authenticator.
- Confirm that the method is shown as active on the account page. Epic says it also sends a confirmation email.
- If you enable more than one method, use the three-dot menu beside a method and choose Make my primary 2FA method to select the one Epic should use first.
Epic lists 2FA as a requirement for claiming some free games on the Epic Games Store, sending gifts in Fortnite, and participating in Fortnite competitive events. These are Epic-stated requirements; they do not mean that every free game requires 2FA. Epic’s setup guide explains the current process.
Which Epic Games 2FA method should you choose?
Epic lists four method types: Epic Authenticator, third-party authenticator apps, email codes, and SMS codes. Epic says, “Using an authenticator app provides the strongest protection.” That is Epic’s recommendation, not an independent comparative security study. Epic’s method guide describes the options.

For most readers choosing between these options, an authenticator app is the choice Epic specifically recommends. Whichever method you use, make sure you can also recover access to the account if its device or inbox becomes unavailable.

Save backup codes and prepare for account recovery
Epic says that users who first enable 2FA with an authenticator app are given backup codes. Store them somewhere you can reach if you lose your phone, but do not share or publish them. Epic’s recovery guidance specifies an eight-digit backup code.
When prompted for 2FA during sign-in, select Try another way, then choose email verification or Enter your Two-Factor verification backup codes, if offered. If you cannot sign in at all, start with Trouble signing in? on Epic’s sign-in page, enter the account email, and follow the recovery prompts. What Epic can restore depends on the account and what it can verify; there is no guaranteed outcome or timeline. Once you recover the account, Epic advises resetting its password and enabling 2FA again. Epic’s account-access guidance covers recovery when you cannot access the account email.
Secure the email and linked accounts too
2FA protects the Epic sign-in, but account access can also depend on the email address and other accounts connected to it. Epic recommends using a unique Epic password, keeping an email address you expect to retain, verifying that address, and protecting the email account with its own unique password and 2FA. A password manager can help generate and store strong, unique passwords.

Epic also recommends securing linked accounts—such as Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo, Facebook, or Google—with unique passwords and 2FA. These are Epic’s published account-security recommendations. Read Epic’s account-security guidance.

Epic says some regional phone numbers are unsupported. In a country-specific notice, Epic states that SMS 2FA would stop being available beginning August 31 in Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Mexico, Azerbaijan, Senegal, and the Republic of Niger; the notice excerpt does not specify the year. It separately says SMS 2FA was disabled in Russia in January 2026. Because availability can change, check your account’s current options and Epic’s current country notice before relying on text messages. If SMS is unavailable, choose another listed method, such as an authenticator app.
