A breach notice does not mean someone has already taken over your accounts. First find out what information was exposed, then change any affected or reused passwords and secure your email. If you see unauthorized changes or cannot sign in, treat it as an active account takeover and use the provider’s recovery process. The steps below are U.S.-focused and draw on guidance from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
1. Find out what information was exposed
Read the notice from the organization that experienced the breach. Identify whether it says a password, email address, payment details, Social Security number, or other identity information was involved. Exposure alone does not prove that someone accessed or changed your accounts.
For steps tailored to the type of information involved, use the FTC’s data breach guidance. If you receive an unexpected message about a breach, do not rely on its links; visit the organization’s known website or type IdentityTheft.gov into your browser yourself.
2. Change exposed and reused passwords
- Change the password for the affected service as soon as possible.
- Change the password on any other account where you used the same or a similar one. Prioritize your email account, then financial, payment, social, and other sensitive accounts.
- Give each account a unique password. A password manager is an optional way to create and keep track of complex passwords; the FTC discusses this and other account protections in its password and account security guidance.
A password change protects accounts where credentials may have been exposed or reused. It does not, by itself, restore an account that has already been taken over.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Secure your email and turn on multi-factor authentication
Secure your email early: access to your inbox may let someone receive password-reset links for other services. Change its password if exposed or reused, enable multi-factor authentication (MFA), and check for forwarding rules or messages you did not send or delete.
Turn on MFA for important accounts wherever it is available. When a service supports stronger choices, the FTC recommends considering an authenticator app or security key rather than text or email codes; it describes security keys as the strongest MFA option among those it discusses. A hardware security key for two-factor authentication is a physical option, but check that both the account and your device support it. Make a recovery plan in case you lose the key.

4. If you see signs of account takeover, recover access
An unexpected password change, inability to log in, or activity you did not authorize can indicate active compromise. Follow the service provider’s official account-recovery instructions. The FTC’s account recovery guidance covers email and social accounts.
Once you regain access, work through these checks:
- Set a new, unique password.
- Sign out of other devices or sessions.
- Verify that the recovery email address and phone number are yours.
- Inspect email forwarding settings and review sent, deleted, or social messages for unauthorized activity.
- Tell contacts to ignore suspicious messages sent from the compromised account.
5. If identity information was exposed, take identity and credit steps
If a Social Security number or other identity information was exposed, use the FTC’s breach resource for steps specific to that information. If someone is using your identity, report it at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the personalized recovery plan.

A credit freeze and a fraud alert are both free, but they work differently. A freeze restricts access to your credit report and can help prevent new credit accounts; it does not secure existing account logins or payment accounts, and it does not prevent every kind of fraud. A fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. The FTC explains how credit freezes work and provides additional steps after a data breach.
| Option | How it works | How to place it | Duration and trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts access to your credit report to help block new credit accounts. | Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. | Free and remains until you lift it. You may need to lift it when applying for credit. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. | Request it from one of the three nationwide credit bureaus; that bureau must notify the other two. | Free, lasts one year, and can be renewed. |
The FTC says a credit freeze is available to anyone and does not affect your credit score. Choose a freeze if you want to restrict access to your credit report and are prepared to lift it when needed; choose an alert if you prefer the identity-verification request. Neither measure replaces securing exposed passwords or recovering an account that was taken over.
