Telegram security depends on what you are trying to protect. To protect account access, keep control of your registered phone number, consider a passkey, and enable Two-Step Verification and an app passcode. To protect a one-to-one conversation with end-to-end encryption, start a Secret Chat: ordinary cloud chats are not Telegram’s end-to-end encrypted chat mode. Bots and Mini Apps are separate services, so treat them accordingly.
How secure is Telegram?
Telegram offers account protections and an end-to-end encrypted mode, but those are different safeguards. A passkey, Two-Step Verification and an app passcode help protect access to your account or app. They do not make every conversation end-to-end encrypted, and they cannot protect a device from someone with physical or root access.
Telegram’s guidance, reviewed October 4, 2026, recommends Two-Step Verification and a strong app passcode for people concerned about personal security or access to their devices. Settings and feature availability can vary as the app changes, so use the current app interface and official help for device-specific instructions.
What should I turn on to secure my Telegram account?
- Consider a passkey. In Telegram, open Settings → Privacy and Security and review Passkeys. Telegram says a passkey can use a device PIN or biometric instead of SMS for login. Its FAQ explains: “With a passkey, you can log in to your device simply by entering a PIN code or biometric data like your Face ID or fingerprint scan.” Think about where the passkey is stored and how it is backed up before relying on it.
- Keep your account number current and under your control. Telegram says SMS login remains possible even if you use a passkey. A passkey therefore does not eliminate the importance of access to the phone number registered to your account.
- Enable Two-Step Verification. Telegram recommends it as an additional account protection. Follow the current in-app prompts to set it up.
- Set a strong app passcode. This adds a lock for access to Telegram on the device; choose a code that is not easy to guess.
- Review logged-in devices or sessions. If the current app provides session management, check for devices you do not recognize and end those sessions. Menu labels may vary, so consult Telegram’s current in-app help rather than relying on a fixed path.
- Secure the device itself. Use the phone or computer’s screen lock and keep access to the device restricted. Telegram says it cannot protect users from someone with physical or root access to a device running Telegram.
Are Telegram messages end-to-end encrypted by default?
No. Telegram distinguishes its cloud chats from Secret Chats, which it identifies as the end-to-end encrypted chat mode. Do not assume that an ordinary conversation is end-to-end encrypted, and do not assume an existing cloud chat can simply be converted into a Secret Chat.

How do I start a Secret Chat, and what changes?
Start a new Secret Chat with the person you want to speak with, using the current Telegram interface for your device. The exact controls can vary by app version; use Telegram’s in-app help if the option is not where expected. A Secret Chat is a distinct conversation, not a setting that retroactively changes an existing cloud chat.
- Encryption: Telegram describes Secret Chats as end-to-end encrypted.
- Device behavior: The chat is device-bound and does not sync across your devices like a cloud chat.
- Sharing: Messages cannot be forwarded.
- Expiry: A self-destruct timer can be used.
- Recipient limits: End-to-end encryption does not stop someone from photographing the screen with another device.
What if I lose my phone or no longer control my number?
A passkey can reduce reliance on SMS for login, but Telegram still allows SMS login and says the account number should remain current and under your control. Losing a device and losing access to the registered number are different problems; recovery can depend on the account and device. Telegram’s cited guidance does not establish one recovery procedure for every operating system, device or region, so use the current in-app help for account-specific recovery rather than relying on generic steps.

Are Telegram bots and Mini Apps safe to use?
Treat a bot or Mini App as a third-party service, not as a private extension of Telegram. Telegram advises users to check the service’s privacy policy. Avoid sending it sensitive information it does not need, and consider what data you are sharing before using its features.
A preprint posted August 18, 2026, by the authors of TENET: Telegram Mini App (in)security reported security flaws in 30 of the 37 Mini Apps they analyzed. That is a finding about the study sample, not evidence that 30 out of every 37 Mini Apps—or 81% of the entire ecosystem—are insecure. It is preliminary, scoped research rather than a platform-wide audit.
