Secure your smart home by starting with the router, then protecting each device account, keeping software updated, and limiting unnecessary data collection. Give cameras, smart TVs, and voice assistants extra attention because they can expose video, viewing behavior, or voice recordings.

1. Secure your router and Wi-Fi first

Your router is the gateway most connected devices use to reach the internet, so its settings affect the whole household. The FTC recommends changing the router’s default administrator credentials, enabling wireless encryption, installing available updates, and checking which devices are connected. Its home-device security guidance and camera guidance are U.S. consumer recommendations; exact menu names vary by router.

  1. Change the administrator login. Replace any factory-set administrator username or password with credentials that are difficult to guess and not reused elsewhere. This is separate from the password you use to join Wi-Fi.
  2. Rename the Wi-Fi network. Choose a name that does not reveal your name, address, or other personal details.
  3. Enable the strongest encryption available. Use WPA3 or WPA2 if your router offers it. Avoid leaving wireless security disabled.
  4. Install router updates. Check the manufacturer’s current instructions for firmware updates and apply them when available.
  5. Review connected devices. Use the router’s client or device list to identify devices your household recognizes. If an entry is unfamiliar, check whether it is a household device under an unexpected name before taking action.
  6. Consider a separate network. If your router supports a guest or dedicated network, consider placing smart-home devices—especially cameras—there, apart from computers and printers. The degree of isolation depends on the router’s capabilities and configuration.

CISA’s 2019 digital-home tip sheet describes the wireless router as the “primary entrance” for cybercriminals to access connected devices. That is a reason to secure it, not a claim that every attack enters through a router.

2. Protect each device and its account

A well-secured Wi-Fi network does not replace account security on each product. A compromised device account may still expose device controls or data, so use protections offered by both the device and its companion app.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Replace default device passwords and use a unique password for each account. Do not reuse your email or Wi-Fi password.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (also called multifactor authentication) wherever the manufacturer offers it.
  • Turn on built-in protections such as device encryption or passcode lockout when available.
  • Keep device firmware and companion apps updated. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the current update process.
  • Disable features you do not use, including remote management when it is unnecessary.
  • Disconnect devices you no longer use. If a device is no longer receiving security updates, consider retiring it rather than leaving it connected.

Settings and support policies differ by manufacturer and model. Use the current manual or support page for the exact product; there is no universal update-support period established by the cited guidance.

3. Reduce unnecessary data collection

Security settings control who can access a device; privacy settings help control what information it collects or shares. Review the companion app and the device itself, since controls may be in either place.

  • Review smart TV tracking. Look in the TV’s privacy or viewing-data settings and choose the available tracking options based on your preference. Delete apps you no longer use; unused TV apps may collect behavior data.
  • Review voice assistant controls. Check the manufacturer’s current settings for recordings and privacy controls. The FTC notes that voice assistants may listen and may send recordings to the manufacturer. For sensitive conversations, keep them away from voice-enabled devices when appropriate; CISA’s advice about this precaution is framed for sensitive federal telework calls, not as a blanket household rule.

Labels and settings change, so consult the current instructions for your exact model and app rather than relying on a menu path from another device.

4. Treat home cameras as sensitive devices

A connected camera can expose live or recorded video and audio. The FTC recommends checking security features before purchase and securing the account and software after installation.

Before buying a camera

  • Check whether the manufacturer documents encryption for account information, live feeds, and archived video.
  • Look for two-factor authentication and other account protections.
  • Check the stated security-update support and whether the router you use can place the camera on a guest or separate network.
  • Review available privacy controls and access logs. The FTC’s home-camera security advice supports these feature checks, but does not certify a particular model.

After installation

  • Use a unique password for the linked account and enable two-factor authentication if offered.
  • Keep camera software and router firmware current.
  • Restrict remote viewing to people who need access, and remove viewers who no longer need it.
  • Check access logs if the camera provides them.
  • Consider a separate network for the camera if your router supports it. Network separation can limit reachability from other household devices, but the result depends on the router’s isolation features and setup.

5. Decide whether an older device should stay connected

You do not need to replace every smart-home product to improve security. First check whether the exact model is still supported, receives updates, and offers protections such as encryption and account security. If it remains supported, applying the steps above may be enough. If it is no longer supported or cannot use basic protections, disconnecting or replacing it is a more prudent option.

When shopping for a router or camera, compare the manufacturer’s stated update support, encryption, authentication options, privacy controls, and—on cameras—protection for video in transit and stored recordings. The cited federal guidance does not establish a universal support duration or identify a particular product as best.
