Use a password manager to create and store a different, hard-to-guess password for every account that still requires one. Protect the manager with a long master passphrase and multifactor authentication (MFA) when available. Add passkeys to important accounts that support them, and make sure you can recover access if you lose a device or vault.

Secure the accounts that can unlock the rest

Start with the email account you use to reset other passwords: someone who controls it may be able to take over other accounts. Then protect financial and other high-impact accounts. Enable MFA wherever it is offered, including on email, financial, social, online-store, gaming, and streaming accounts, as CISA advises on its More than a Password page.

When an account supports passkeys or another FIDO/WebAuthn sign-in, prefer that phishing-resistant option where it fits your setup. CISA describes FIDO/WebAuthn as the only widely available phishing-resistant authentication. Other MFA methods can still add protection, but methods such as SMS are more exposed to interception or relay than phishing-resistant authentication.

Use a password manager for accounts that still need passwords

A password manager generates and stores distinct passwords so you do not have to memorize or reuse them. NIST recommends using a password manager and says that if you must create a password, it should be at least 15 characters long. That is NIST guidance, not a measured security threshold. Choose a long, memorable master passphrase for the vault, and enable the manager’s own MFA if it offers it.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
  1. Choose a reputable password manager that works on the devices you use. Before relying on it, review how it protects the vault, supports MFA, and handles recovery.
  2. Create a long master passphrase that you do not use for any other account. Enable MFA for the manager where available.
  3. For each account that still uses a password, generate a unique password in the manager and save it there. Replace reused passwords first, prioritizing email and high-impact accounts.

A password manager reduces password reuse, but it also concentrates access: losing the vault or its recovery method can disrupt many logins. NIST cautions that vault recovery can introduce risk, so understand the provider’s recovery model rather than assuming every manager works the same way.

Add passkeys where services support them

Passkeys are cryptographic credentials associated with a service. You typically unlock one with a device PIN, pattern, or biometric rather than memorizing and typing a site password. They are designed to resist phishing because authentication is bound to the legitimate service. Passkeys are not available on every site or app, and the exact setup and sign-in flow depend on the service, device, and credential manager.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
  1. Open the service’s account or sign-in settings and look for passkey setup. Follow that service’s own steps; there is no universal setup path.
  2. Note where the passkey is saved: for example, in a platform credential manager or a compatible third-party password manager.
  3. Check that you can use it on the other devices you need. Google documents passkey support through Google Password Manager and compatible third-party managers on Android, but support and availability vary by service.

NIST says correctly implemented syncable authenticators can support use across devices and simplify recovery. That benefit depends on how the credential manager and service implement synchronization and recovery; do not assume a passkey will automatically appear on every device.

Plan recovery before changing how you sign in

Keep each account’s recovery information current, and understand the alternate sign-in route before depending on a new passkey or security key. Recovery is service-specific: a provider may handle a lost device, vault, or authenticator differently from another provider.

  • Confirm you can reach the account’s recovery email or phone number and update outdated details.
  • While you still have access, test the available alternate sign-in or recovery route if the service allows it.
  • If you use a physical security key, check that the account supports it and register a compatible backup key where recommended.

For users enrolled in Google’s Advanced Protection program, Google recommends a primary and backup security key. Its guidance says to add a replacement key and remove a lost one if account access remains; if access is already lost, use Google’s account recovery process. This advice applies to Google’s program, not every account provider.

Choose sign-in methods by coverage, resistance, and recovery

What to check Why it matters
Coverage Not every service supports passkeys, so some accounts will still need manager-generated passwords.
Phishing resistance Passkeys and FIDO/WebAuthn bind authentication to the legitimate service. Common MFA methods such as SMS are more exposed to interception or relay.
Recovery and portability Know where credentials are stored, how they reach a replacement device, and what happens if the vault or device is lost. NIST notes that syncable authenticators can support cross-device use and simpler recovery when implemented correctly.
Compatibility and friction A passkey may unlock with a PIN, pattern, or biometric, but the flow depends on the service, device, and credential manager.
Backup For security-key-based sign-in, confirm account compatibility and register a backup key when the provider recommends it.

Passwords are not disappearing immediately. NIST researcher Bill Galluzzo notes that eliminating passwords completely will take time, so a practical setup uses passkeys where available and unique manager-generated passwords where they are not.
