Tighten the straps until the bag is firmly seated with minimal movement, secure every loose end, and check that the bag and straps cannot reach the wheels, suspension, controls, or hot exhaust. The correct routing, clearances, and load limits depend on your motorcycle and bag.
Before mounting the bag
- Read the motorcycle owner’s manual and the bag’s installation instructions. Confirm the intended seat or rack position, approved anchor points, and load limits for both the motorcycle and luggage.
- Use the mounting layout specified for your bag and motorcycle configuration. There is no single strap pattern established as safe for every combination. Harley-Davidson’s travel-bag instructions describe configurations for particular fitted models; SW-MOTECH’s tail-bag instructions show a specific four-loop-strap arrangement.
- Check that the selected position will not obscure lights or reflectors, and that the bag and its straps can be kept clear of moving and hot parts.
How to fit and secure the roll bag
- Position the bag. Set it on the designated seat or luggage rack and centre it on the mounting surface.
- Route the straps. Follow the bag maker’s diagram and use the intended anchor points. Do not improvise a route that leaves a strap near the wheel, suspension, controls, or exhaust.
- Connect and tension every required strap. Tighten them evenly until the bag sits firmly and has minimal movement. SW-MOTECH’s cited arrangement uses four loop straps, all tensioned until the bag is centred and firmly attached; that layout applies to its specified system, not every roll bag.
- Check clearance along the entire strap path. Look for possible contact with the rear wheel, suspension, controls, hot parts, or exhaust flow. Check clearance through the suspension’s range of movement, following the motorcycle and luggage makers’ instructions. SW-MOTECH specifies at least 5 cm from hot parts and exhaust flow for the cited tail-bag system, including in every suspension condition; do not treat that figure as a universal clearance standard.
- Secure excess strap length. Roll, fold, or tuck loose ends into the supplied retainers or tabs. No tail should flap, touch painted surfaces, or be able to reach a wheel or other moving part.
- Test the installation. Check that the bag cannot lift or shift significantly, then verify that lights and reflectors remain visible. Correct any problem before riding.
What to check before riding and at stops
Inspect the bag and every strap before setting off. Recheck them at stops, and follow the inspection interval in your own luggage instructions. SW-MOTECH recommends checks at rest stops, around every 200 km, for the cited instructions; that is a maker-specific interval, not a universal rule.
Pay particular attention to loosened straps, movement of the bag, strap tails that have come free, and any change in clearance near the wheel, suspension, or exhaust. If anything has shifted, stop and secure it again before continuing.
Choosing a bag or mounting straps
A purpose-made motorcycle roll bag or tail bag is the relevant product category. Kriega describes its ROLLPACK as designed for a rear rack or pillion seat, with mounting straps and retainers for loose ends. SW-MOTECH’s cited instructions illustrate a tail-bag system with four loop straps. These examples show different mounting approaches; they do not establish universal fit or a comparative winner.

- Check that the bag fits the intended seat or rack and has usable, suitable anchor points on your motorcycle.
- Confirm that the straps can be routed and retained safely, with clearance from moving and hot parts.
- Check the bag’s and motorcycle’s load limits and mounting instructions.
- If you need replacement or additional straps, first check whether the bag includes suitable hardware and whether the maker approves the replacement. Compatibility matters; no universal strap set is established here.
Why the load and installation matter
Harley-Davidson warns in its travel-bag installation instructions: “Improper cargo loading or accessory installation can cause component failure and adversely affect stability, handling and performance, which could result in death or serious injury.” This is the manufacturer’s warning in its own installation material. Use the limits and configuration for your specific motorcycle and bag; any model- or bag-specific limits in those instructions should not be generalized to other setups.
