Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To secure a home NAS, give each person a separate account with access only to the folders and apps they need, keep the NAS and its software updated, and avoid exposing its management interface directly to the internet. If you need remote access, use a supported, restricted method—such as a properly configured VPN or a vendor service—and check that your router is not opening additional paths to the NAS.
Start with a user-permission audit
Use a separate account for each household member rather than sharing an administrator login. Set permissions for shared folders and applications to match each person’s actual needs, using groups when that makes household roles easier to manage. Keep administrative tasks separate from everyday file access where the NAS supports separate accounts.
- Remove or disable accounts that no longer need access.
- Where supported, disable the default administrator account and create a separate administrator identity. QNAP recommends disabling the default “admin” account and creating a new administrator; Synology also advises deactivating the default admin account.
- Review folder and application privileges after adding users or changing household needs. Synology’s guidance also covers group or individual privilege settings, quotas, and speed limits.
These controls differ by vendor and operating-system version. For Synology DSM, see Synology’s user and group permissions guidance. For QNAP, see its NAS security best practices.
Keep firmware and installed apps current
Check the update panel and release information for your exact NAS model and operating-system version. Install firmware and application updates, and enable automatic updates if your device offers them and that setting suits your household. Update menus, available releases, and automatic-update behavior vary across models and versions.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a time when a restart or brief service interruption would be manageable, and consult the vendor’s model-specific release notes before applying a major update. QNAP recommends firmware updates and automatic updates in its ransomware-protection FAQ; its instructions were last modified December 16, 2022, so menu labels may have changed.
Check whether your NAS is exposed to the internet
Keep the NAS behind your home router rather than connecting it directly to the internet-facing modem. QNAP’s security guidance states, “You should never directly connect the network port of the NAS to the Internet.”

In your router’s settings, look for port-forwarding rules that point to the NAS, whether the NAS has been placed in a DMZ, and whether UPnP is automatically creating forwarding rules. Turn off forwarding or UPnP that you do not need, and check any NAS vendor feature that configures the router automatically so it does not reintroduce unwanted exposure. CISA’s general home-network advice also recommends updates and disabling UPnP and remote management; it is router guidance, not NAS-specific setup documentation.
For product-specific advice, consult QNAP’s NAS Security Guide. For general home-network recommendations, see CISA’s home-network guidance. Router menus and available controls depend on the router and ISP.

Choose a remote-access method deliberately
If you do not need to reach the NAS from outside your home, turn off remote-access features and public-facing services you do not use. If you do need access while away, choose a method supported by your NAS and router, then restrict it to the intended accounts or devices. Do not enable broad access simply to make setup easier.
QNAP describes three options in its own guidance: a VPN hosted by the router, a VPN hosted on the NAS, and myQNAPcloud Link. These are QNAP-specific examples, not universal features or recommendations for every NAS brand.

| Method | Does the NAS need to accept inbound public connections? | Setup and trade-offs | Access controls and compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Router-hosted VPN | It can provide remote access through the router rather than exposing NAS services directly; the exact network configuration depends on the router. | QNAP describes VPN setup as requiring more configuration. Router capabilities can limit the option. | Use controls on the VPN and router to limit who can connect. Confirm that your router supports the required setup. |
| VPN hosted on the NAS | The NAS may need an inbound connection for the VPN service; configuration determines what is reachable. | QNAP describes VPN options as involving more setup. Performance and configuration depend on the NAS, network, and service. | Confirm that your model supports the VPN service and restrict accounts and access according to its current instructions. |
| myQNAPcloud Link | QNAP describes Link as a way to access the NAS without directly exposing it to the internet. | QNAP characterizes Link as easier to set up but slower than VPN options. That is the vendor’s description, not an independent performance test. | QNAP documents Private or Customized device-access controls for Link. It is a QNAP service; availability and setup depend on the product and service. |
The table reflects QNAP’s descriptions, not independent speed tests or a universal compatibility list. For current instructions and service details, check QNAP’s remote-access and security guidance and its FAQ on NAS protection. VPN configuration differs by router and service; confirm support and follow the current instructions for your specific devices. The available guidance does not establish one VPN protocol or compatibility choice for every household.

- Sign in with each household account and confirm that it can reach only its intended folders and applications.
- Check the NAS update panel and confirm the installed firmware and apps are current for your model.
- Review router port forwarding, UPnP, and DMZ settings against the remote-access method you chose.
- Repeat the review after adding or removing a user, changing the router, installing a firmware update, or enabling a new service.
On Synology DSM, Security Advisor can help identify settings to review. Synology describes it as a built-in app that scans a Synology NAS, checks DSM settings, and gives advice on addressing security weaknesses. It is a settings check, not a replacement for careful permissions, updates, or router configuration. Synology says its guidance applies to DSM 7 series and legacy versions and was last updated May 27, 2026; see the Synology Knowledge Center for details.
