To secure a Coinbase.com account, add a passkey or security key for sign-in, keep a second verification method available, secure the email account tied to Coinbase, and enable the Address Book allowlist to restrict crypto withdrawals to saved destinations. Coinbase says new allowlisted addresses take 48 hours to become available, so plan ahead before you need to send funds.
Choose strong sign-in verification and keep a recovery option
Coinbase recommends a passkey or security key for 2-step verification. Its setup guidance also recommends keeping multiple methods available, including two security keys or a passkey paired with a security key. The second method matters: a highly secure sign-in setup is only useful if you can still access your account when a device or key is lost.
Coinbase says passkeys are cryptographic credentials generated on your device and are not shared or stored on a server. Make sure you can access the passkey through the device or passkey provider where you set it up, and retain another verification method as a recovery path. If you choose a physical security key, check that it works with the browsers and devices you use to access Coinbase.
To set this up, sign in to Coinbase.com and open the Security or 2-step verification settings. The available choices Coinbase documents are:

- Passkey or security key: Coinbase’s recommended choices for stronger account verification. A second key or a key paired with a passkey can help preserve access if one method is unavailable.
- Authenticator app: Coinbase supports time-based one-time password apps such as Duo, Google Authenticator, and Microsoft Authenticator. This can be a practical alternative or backup, but protect access to the device holding the codes.
- Push notifications: Coinbase supports prompts sent to a device. Approve only sign-ins you initiated.
- SMS: Coinbase identifies SMS as its least secure 2-step method. Prefer a stronger option when possible, and do not treat SMS as equivalent to a passkey or security key.

Secure the email, password, and devices around Coinbase
A secure Coinbase sign-in can still be undermined if someone controls the email account used for recovery or has access to an unlocked device. Use a strong, unique Coinbase password, preferably stored in a password manager, and turn on 2-step verification for the linked email account.

- Review the email account’s recovery addresses and phone numbers, authorized devices, and forwarding rules. Remove anything you do not recognize.
- In Coinbase, review active sessions and authorized apps or devices, then revoke access you do not recognize.
- If you find an unrecognized Coinbase sign-in, Coinbase recommends changing both your Coinbase password and your email password.
- In the Coinbase mobile app, enable a PIN or biometric protection such as Touch ID or Face ID if available on your device. This is an additional local app safeguard, not a replacement for account-level 2-step verification.
Reach Coinbase by using a saved bookmark or its official help center rather than a phone number or support account sent to you unexpectedly. Coinbase’s account-security guidance states, “Coinbase employees will never ask for your password.” Do not give anyone your password, 2-step verification code, email access, remote-control access, or money on the claim that they are Coinbase support. Enable the Coinbase.com Address Book allowlist
The Coinbase.com allowlist restricts crypto sends to addresses saved in your Address Book. This can limit where funds can be sent if someone gains access to your account, but it cannot prevent every loss—for example, if you are deceived into approving a transfer or your email or device is compromised.

- Sign in to Coinbase.com and open your profile settings.
- Select Settings, then Allow list.
- Turn on allowlisting and complete the requested verification prompt. Coinbase requires access to your 2-step verification method to activate, deactivate, and use the feature.
- Add the destination address and enter the relevant currency and address details. Before saving, independently verify the destination address, asset, and network.
According to Coinbase’s Coinbase.com Address Book allowlist help page, a newly added address takes 48 hours to become available. Disabling allowlisting also takes 48 hours, except Coinbase says this hold does not apply if you turn it off within 8 hours of activating it. These are Coinbase’s operational timing rules, not estimates of transfer-processing time.
Use the instructions for your exact Coinbase service
These steps and waiting periods are for Coinbase.com. Coinbase Exchange has separate Address Book and withdrawal-address whitelisting documentation, and Coinbase says those features are available through Exchange rather than Coinbase.com or the Coinbase app. Coinbase International Exchange documentation surfaced for this topic describes a 24-hour address activation period. Do not apply either Exchange timing or steps to Coinbase.com; use the help instructions for the exact service where you hold or send funds.

An allowlist adds friction before a newly entered destination can receive a withdrawal, which can help if an attacker takes over an account and tries to send crypto to an unfamiliar address. It is not a substitute for strong sign-in verification, a protected email account, or checking a transaction before approving it.
