Most enameled cast-iron pots do not need traditional seasoning: their glass-like enamel protects the iron, so do not automatically coat the pot in oil and bake it as you would bare cast iron. Care details vary by brand and model, so follow the pot’s instructions—particularly if they recommend occasional oiling. For routine care, cool the pot fully, wash it gently, and dry it thoroughly.
Does an enameled cast-iron pot need seasoning?
Usually, no. Traditional cast-iron seasoning means baking oil onto bare iron; an enamel coating changes the surface, so that routine does not generally apply. Le Creuset says its fully enamel-sealed cast iron does not need seasoning. Staub’s current care guide, however, includes a limited recommendation to brush its cast-iron product with cooking oil at intervals. That brand-specific advice is not a universal seasoning rule. Check the care leaflet for your exact pot, including whether its interior is dark or textured.
How to wash and dry the pot
- Let it cool completely. Do not put a hot pot under cold water or into a cold sink. A sudden temperature change can damage or crack the enamel.
- Wash gently. Use warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge or brush. Avoid metal scouring pads and abrasive tools as routine cleaning equipment.
- Rinse and dry thoroughly. Dry the whole pot, including the rim, before putting it away.
Le Creuset recommends hand washing to help keep its finish bright, although many of its cast-iron products are dishwasher-safe. Dishwasher suitability varies by product, so check the instructions for your model rather than assuming all enameled pots can go in the dishwasher.

For tougher residue
Le Creuset suggests simmering water with one or two tablespoons of baking soda for about 8–10 minutes. Let the pot cool, then wipe it with a soft sponge. For persistent stains or oily residue, its cleaning guidance also names cookware cleaner, Bar Keepers Friend, or a baking-soda paste. Follow the cleaner’s label and your cookware maker’s directions; these are options for stubborn marks, not a requirement for everyday washing. See Le Creuset’s cleaning guidance.
How to heat an enameled cast-iron pot safely
- Heat the pot gradually and use low to medium settings for ordinary cooking.
- Do not heat an empty enameled pot on high. Staub warns against doing so; Le Creuset also cautions against rapid heating and high heat.
- Check the manual for the oven-temperature limit. A lid, knob, or handle may have a lower limit than the iron body.
- Use a trivet or other heat-resistant protection when setting down hot cookware.
For model-specific limits and handling instructions, consult the maker’s Care and Use guidance or the manual supplied with your pot.

How to store the pot
Put the pot away clean and completely dry, in a dry cupboard away from steam. If you stack or nest cookware, felt protectors can cushion pieces and help prevent scratches; Le Creuset recommends them for that purpose.
Le Creuset says its nonporous enamel allows food storage in the refrigerator or freezer, provided the appliance and cookware can safely support the loaded pot. This is manufacturer-specific advice, not a rule established here for every brand, so check your own product instructions before storing a filled pot that way.

Which instructions should you follow if advice conflicts?
Use the instructions for your exact brand and model. When comparing advice, check the interior enamel type, whether the maker recommends any oiling, dishwasher guidance, and temperature limits for the knob, lid, and handles. General guidance about enameled cookware cannot establish that all brands have the same care requirements or rank their durability.
For example, Le Creuset UK’s casserole-care guidance says its casseroles do not need seasoning before or after use. Lodge’s enameled cast-iron guide distinguishes its porcelain-enamel surface from traditional seasoning. Those statements apply to the makers’ products; your own pot’s manual remains the best reference.
