The quickest way to screenshot Facebook is to use your device’s built-in capture shortcut: Print Screen or Snipping Tool on Windows, Command-Shift-4 on Mac, side button + volume up on iPhone and iPad, and usually power + volume down on Android. The image is then saved to your device’s normal screenshot location or copied to the clipboard, depending on the method.
This guide covers posts, profiles, photos, Stories, Messenger content, saving and sharing, and Facebook’s screenshot-notification behavior.
How to screenshot Facebook on Windows
Capture the entire screen with Print Screen
- Open Facebook and display the post, profile, photo, or other content.
- Press Print Screen (sometimes labeled PrtSc or PrtScn).
- Open Paint, PowerPoint, an email, or another image-capable app.
- Press Ctrl+V to paste the capture.
- Save or export the image in the format you need.
Print Screen captures everything visible on your monitors, including taskbars, browser tabs, notifications, and unrelated windows. Crop the pasted image before sharing.
Select only the Facebook area with Snipping Tool
- Open Facebook and position the content you want to keep on screen.
- Open Snipping Tool from the Windows Start menu.
- Choose New.
- Drag around the Facebook post or other area.
- In the Snipping Tool window, choose the save command, then use File > Save As.
- Choose a location and format such as PNG.
This is usually the better Windows method for a single post because it avoids capturing the whole desktop. A normal screenshot cannot automatically include an entire long, scrollable Facebook page; capture several sections or use a dedicated webpage-capture workflow for that task.

How to screenshot Facebook on a Mac
Capture a selected area
- Open the Facebook content in your browser or app.
- Press Command-Shift-4.
- Drag across the area to capture.
- Release the pointer.
Under the documented macOS behavior, the image is saved to the desktop with a date-based filename beginning “Screen Shot.” Move or rename it like any other file.
Use the macOS Screenshot app
- Press Shift-Command-5.
- Choose full-screen capture, a selected window, a selected portion, or screen recording.
- Set the destination and other available options.
- Capture the Facebook content and open the resulting file from the chosen destination.
The Screenshot app is useful when you want a predictable destination or need to capture a window rather than draw a rectangle manually. Check the selected area carefully so browser tabs, account names, or notifications are not exposed.
How to screenshot Facebook on iPhone or iPad
iPhone and iPad models with Face ID or no Home button
- Display the Facebook post, profile, photo, or message.
- Press the side (power) button and volume up button together.
- Release both buttons immediately.
- Tap the thumbnail that appears if you want to mark up, crop, or share it; otherwise let it disappear.
Devices with a Home button
- Show the Facebook content.
- Press the power/side button and Home button together.
- Release after the flash or shutter sound.
The capture appears in the iOS Photos app (formerly commonly called the Camera Roll). Open Photos > Albums > Screenshots to find it quickly, then crop or annotate it before sending.
How to screenshot Facebook on Android
Most Android phones
- Open the Facebook screen you need.
- Press power and volume down together.
- Release promptly when the screen flashes or a preview appears.
- Use the preview controls to crop, scroll, edit, or share when offered.
Most phones place the image in the Gallery or Google Photos app, usually in a Screenshots folder.

Samsung Galaxy
- Display the Facebook content.
- Press power and volume down together.
- Open the result in Gallery, normally under the Screenshots album.
Some older Samsung models use volume down + Home. If the buttons do not work, consult the current support instructions for your phone maker: button layouts, palm gestures, and screenshot menus vary by model and Android version.

Will Facebook notify someone when you take a screenshot?
Disappearing Messenger messages
Meta announced on January 27, 2022 that it would introduce a notification when it detects a screenshot of a disappearing message. Meta described this as the same protection used in Messenger’s vanish mode. If you screenshot a disappearing message in an end-to-end encrypted Messenger chat, assume the other participant may be alerted.
Ordinary Facebook content
Current independent technical reporting says Facebook generally does not notify the owner when you capture an ordinary profile, feed post, photo, Story, or other public content. This is a product behavior, not a permanent promise: Facebook can change detection and notification rules, and behavior may differ by feature or app version.
Do not treat the absence of an alert as permission to redistribute private material. Respect the person’s privacy, the context in which the content was shared, and any applicable law or platform rule.

How to save, find, edit, and share a Facebook screenshot
Find the file
- Windows: a Print Screen capture remains in the clipboard until pasted; a Snipping Tool capture is saved when you use its save command.
- Mac: Command-Shift-4 normally puts the file on the desktop; Shift-Command-5 can use another destination.
- iPhone and iPad: open Photos and look in Screenshots.
- Android and Samsung: open Gallery or Google Photos and look in Screenshots.
Crop and redact before sharing
- Open the image in your device’s editor.
- Crop away unrelated conversations, browser tabs, notification banners, phone numbers, and profile details.
- Use an opaque mark or blur tool for information that should not be readable. A translucent brush may leave text recoverable.
- Check the final image at full size before posting or sending it.
Preserve context when it matters
A crop can remove the date, author, or surrounding comments that explain what a post means. Keep a private original, and make a separate redacted copy for sharing. Never publish a disappearing-message screenshot as though it were an ordinary post.
Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
- On Windows laptops, try Fn+Print Screen if the key shares another function.
- On Android, press both buttons briefly and simultaneously; a long press may open the power menu.
- On iPhone or iPad, verify that you are pressing the side and volume buttons, not a volume button and a case edge.
- Check whether a work-managed device or accessibility policy blocks screenshots.
The screenshot is black, blank, or incomplete
Reload Facebook, wait for images and video thumbnails to finish loading, and capture again. For a long post or comments list, take multiple overlapping captures. A screenshot records visible pixels; it does not reconstruct content that has not loaded or that is outside the viewport.
You cannot find the image
Check the clipboard on Windows by pasting into Paint, the Mac desktop or Screenshot destination, the Photos Screenshots album on Apple devices, and the Gallery or Google Photos Screenshots folder on Android. File-manager search for “Screenshot” can locate renamed or moved files.
Facebook content changes after capture
A screenshot is a static copy. If you need an evidentiary record, retain the original file, note when and where you captured it, and avoid editing that copy. Cropping and redaction should be performed on a duplicate.

Can I screenshot a Facebook Story?
Yes. Use your device’s normal screenshot shortcut. Ordinary Facebook content generally does not trigger a screenshot alert, but disappearing Messenger messages have a documented notification exception and app behavior can change.

How do I screenshot an entire Facebook post?
Use a full-screen capture and take additional overlapping screenshots while scrolling. Built-in shortcuts capture the visible screen, not an automatically reconstructed long page.
Can I screenshot Facebook without the buttons?
Use Snipping Tool or the macOS Screenshot app on computers, and your phone’s accessibility, gesture, or quick-settings screenshot feature if that option is provided by the device maker.
Why is my Facebook screenshot blurry?
The source may not have finished loading, the image may have been compressed by a messaging app, or you may have enlarged a small crop. Wait for the content to load and share the original file when possible.
