Open your browser’s Developer Tools before reproducing the bug, keep the relevant Console message visible, and capture the page and error at a readable size. If they will not fit clearly in one image, attach a page screenshot and a separate Console screenshot or saved log. Add the page URL, exact reproduction steps, expected and actual behavior, and browser and operating-system details so someone else can investigate.

Capture the failure and error reliably

  1. Open the page where the problem occurs, then open Developer Tools before reproducing it. In Edge, the Console is the default place for JavaScript and connectivity errors (Microsoft Edge Console documentation). Firefox’s Web Console records network requests, JavaScript, CSS and security messages, as well as errors, warnings and messages logged by page scripts (Firefox Web Console documentation).
  2. Reproduce the issue using the same steps you intend to report. Find the relevant error in the Console and leave it visible. If a reload or navigation is part of the bug, enable Preserve log in the Network tool so requests remain available across page loads; see the Edge Network reference for its Network controls.
  3. Choose a screenshot framing that communicates the defect. A browser-window screenshot can show both the broken page and Console message, but only use one image if both remain legible. Otherwise, take separate screenshots or include a saved Console log.
  4. Review the files before attaching them. Check that the error text can be read and that the image or log does not expose credentials, account details or private data.

Choose the right kind of evidence

Evidence Use it when What it shows
Viewport screenshot The defect is visible in the current browser window. The immediate page state; it can make the relevant defect larger and easier to inspect than a full-page image.
Full-page screenshot The surrounding layout or content elsewhere on the page is important to understanding the bug. The page beyond the visible viewport. Firefox documents capture of an entire page as well as a single element (Firefox screenshot documentation).
Element screenshot A particular component is broken and the rest of the page is not needed to explain it. A selected page element. In Firefox, use the Inspector context menu’s “Screenshot Node” command.
Console screenshot or saved log The browser error itself is important, especially when it cannot fit legibly beside the page. The browser-reported message or messages. Pair it with a page screenshot if the visible failure also needs explanation.
Network log or HAR A failed request, navigation or reload is relevant to the issue. Request activity that may help explain the failure. Preserve the log across reloads when necessary; review the export before sharing.

Take a full-page or element screenshot in Firefox

Firefox provides both a screenshot button for an entire page and a context-menu command for an individual element. Exact controls may vary by browser version and platform.

  1. For the full-page button, open Developer Tools settings and enable “Take a screenshot of the entire page” under “Available Toolbox Buttons.”
  2. Use the screenshot button. Firefox saves the capture in Downloads.
  3. For one element instead, open the Inspector, right-click the element, and choose “Screenshot Node.”

Firefox’s Web Console helper also accepts :screenshot --fullpage. Its screenshot command supports a filename, delay and device-pixel-ratio options; consult Mozilla’s screenshot documentation for the command details.

Include the context needed to reproduce the bug

Attach a concise report with the information that lets another person recreate and assess the failure. This is a practical checklist, not a universal required-fields list:

Protect private information in logs and screenshots

An Edge HAR export can be sanitized by default, omitting sensitive headers such as Cookie, Set-Cookie and Authorization (Edge Network reference). That does not guarantee the entire file is safe to share: inspect URLs, request data, visible account details and other private information yourself. Review screenshots for the same kinds of exposure before attaching them.

Troubleshoot common capture problems

  • The relevant error is missing after a reload: Open Developer Tools before reproducing the problem. For a reload or navigation issue, use Preserve log in the Network tool so activity remains available across page loads.
  • The page and Console are too small to read together: Do not shrink them into one unreadable image. Attach separate page and Console screenshots, or pair the page image with a saved log.
  • The screenshot shows the wrong part of the page: Use a viewport capture for the immediate visible state, a Firefox full-page capture when layout outside the viewport matters, or “Screenshot Node” when the issue is confined to one element.
  • The HAR contains sensitive material: Default sanitization omits certain sensitive headers, but inspect the rest of the export—including URLs and request data—before sharing it.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one GET request. Its screenshot does not include a browser Console log, so use the browser workflow above when the error message itself is required evidence.
