Find it at Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers. Unlike Silence, which sends unknown callers to voicemail, this option lets you decide whether to answer after the caller provides more information. Menu labels and availability can vary with iOS version and settings.
Set up screening without silencing every unknown caller
- Save expected callers in Contacts. Add important numbers such as family, your child’s school, medical offices, and other services that may call from unfamiliar numbers. Apple recommends saving important callers in Contacts; saved contacts are not treated as unsaved unknown callers. Apple’s guide to managing unknown callers gives examples.
- Choose Ask Reason for Calling. Open Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers, then select Ask Reason for Calling. An unknown caller is asked for more information before your phone rings, and you can use the response to decide whether to answer. Apple’s iPhone call-screening guide describes the available options.
- Keep carrier spam filtering separate. If your provider offers it, you can enable Spam under the Phone app’s call-filtering options. It silences calls the carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud, sends them to voicemail, and moves them to Spam. This is not the same as screening all unknown callers, and the option depends on provider support. Apple explains call filtering.
Choose the right iPhone call control
| Option | What happens | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Ask Reason for Calling | The caller is asked for more information before the phone rings; you can review the response and decide whether to answer. | Reducing interruptions while giving a legitimate first-time caller an opportunity to identify themselves. |
| Silence | Unknown callers are silenced and sent to voicemail; their calls appear in call history. | People who prefer fewer interruptions and are willing to check voicemail and call history for legitimate calls. |
| Unknown Callers filter | Missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers appear in a separate Unknown Callers list. | Keeping the main call list clearer, provided you check the filtered list for expected calls. |
| Spam filter | Calls a supported carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud are silenced, sent to voicemail, and placed in Spam. | Filtering carrier-identified spam when your provider makes the option available. |
Apple also supports caller identification through Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, and supported call-identification apps. Identification can help provide context, but it is optional and not required for the built-in Ask Reason for Calling feature. Apple does not publish a screening-accuracy rate or guarantee that every spam or legitimate call will be classified correctly.
Review calls that were filtered or missed
Check filtered lists periodically so a legitimate caller does not get overlooked. In the Phone app, open Calls if you use the Unified layout, or Recents in the Classic layout; tap Filter, then review Unknown Callers and Spam when those lists are available. Apple says the Unified Calls tab applies to iOS 26 or later; older layouts may show Recents. See Apple’s Unified layout instructions.
If a legitimate number appears as unknown, mark it as known to help prevent future calls from being placed in the Unknown Callers list. A filtered list changes where a call appears; it does not mean the call disappeared.

If legitimate calls still go straight to voicemail
- Confirm Screen Unknown Callers is set to Ask Reason for Calling, not Silence. To let unknown callers ring normally while troubleshooting, choose Never.
- Review Focus modes, which can affect whether calls alert you.
- Check Call Filtering and turn off any filtering option that may be diverting calls you need to receive.
- Check Blocked Contacts for numbers you may have blocked accidentally.
- If you enabled the Unknown Callers filter, turn it off to return those calls to the normal Recent calls list. This changes where they appear, rather than restoring a call that has already been missed.
