For small jobs, a synchronous batch may be enough; for larger or slower jobs, submit an asynchronous job and retrieve its results later by polling or using a webhook. Batch request formats, limits, concurrency, and result-retention periods vary by provider, so use that provider’s documentation rather than assuming one API’s request works with another.
Batch scraping versus crawling
A batch scrape processes URLs you already have. You provide an explicit list, and the service returns a result for each submitted URL or task. Crawling is different: it discovers and follows links to find pages. Firecrawl describes its batch operation as working from an explicit list and distinguishes it from crawling in its batch-scrape documentation.
Start with a batch endpoint when your input is a spreadsheet, database query, sitemap you have already parsed, or another known list. Choose a crawl workflow when discovering additional pages is part of the task. Decide whether you need raw page content, structured extraction, or screenshots: those are different outputs, and not every provider offers the same ones.
Choose synchronous or asynchronous processing
Use synchronous batches when the client can wait
A synchronous request keeps the client connected while the provider processes the batch and returns results together. This can be convenient for small jobs and short-running pages, but the request may take longer than a normal web request. Check the provider’s timeout behavior and batch-size guidance before using it in a user-facing request.

Use asynchronous jobs for longer work
An asynchronous API accepts the input, returns a job identifier or per-URL job records, and lets you collect results separately. This avoids holding a client connection open during the entire scrape. Firecrawl documents synchronous and asynchronous modes for explicit-list batches; ScraperAPI’s documented batch endpoint is asynchronous and returns a separate record for each URL. See Firecrawl’s batch documentation and ScraperAPI’s batch-request documentation.
For larger workloads, Oxylabs documents Push-Pull as its asynchronous approach. Its documentation says a batch POST can contain up to 5,000 URL or query values, and that results remain available for at least 24 hours for Push-Pull; submission limits depend on subscription plan. These are Oxylabs-specific terms, not general API limits. Details are in the Oxylabs Web Scraper API documentation.
Prepare inputs and keep a record for every URL
Before submitting a batch, normalize and validate the input list. Keep each URL associated with a stable item ID from your own system. Providers may return results in a different order, or expose a separate job or task ID for each item, so relying on array position alone can attach a result to the wrong record.
- Remove accidental blank entries and deduplicate only if your task treats repeated URLs as redundant.
- Store the exact submitted URL, your own item ID, the provider’s job or task ID, and the submission time.
- Record shared options—such as extraction format or rendering settings—so a later retry uses the same configuration.
- Keep credentials in environment variables or a secret manager; do not commit API keys to source control.
- Check the provider’s current maximum batch size and account-level submission and concurrency limits before dividing the list into jobs.
Batch requests commonly apply shared options to every URL, but request bodies and supported options differ. Do not copy endpoint names, authentication fields, or JSON shapes from one vendor into another’s API.

ScraperAPI documents an asynchronous batch endpoint at https://async.scraperapi.com/batchjobs. Its example uses a JSON body containing apiKey and a urls array. The following Python example submits a list, checks for an HTTP error, and prints the returned per-URL job records so you can persist their identifiers and status URLs.
import json
import os
import requests
api_key = os.environ["SCRAPERAPI_KEY"]
urls = [
"https://example.com/page-one",
"https://example.com/page-two",
]
response = requests.post(
"https://async.scraperapi.com/batchjobs",
json={"apiKey": api_key, "urls": urls},
timeout=30,
)
response.raise_for_status()
jobs = response.json()
print(json.dumps(jobs, indent=2))
# Persist each returned record together with the corresponding input URL.
# Use the status URL and fields returned by the provider to collect results.
Install the dependency with python -m pip install requests, set SCRAPERAPI_KEY in the process environment, and run the script. The returned records include an ID, status, status URL, and URL for each entry, according to ScraperAPI’s batch API documentation. Store those records rather than treating the initial submission response as the scraped page content. Follow the provider’s current documentation for the exact status response and result retrieval fields.

Collect results without over-polling
Polling
For a small or occasional batch, polling is often simplest: submit the job, wait, request its status URL, and continue until the provider reports completion or failure. Use increasing delays between status checks instead of tight loops. Scrape.do explicitly recommends exponential backoff for status checks and documents HTTP 429 as a rate-limit response; its async workflow separates job creation, job status, and task-result retrieval. See Scrape.do’s async API documentation.

Save its identifier and resume checking later, subject to the provider’s result-retention window.
Webhooks and callbacks
For production workloads, a webhook or callback can avoid repeated status requests. Firecrawl documents batch tracking by ID through polling or webhooks, including per-page notifications and started, completed, and failed events. Where webhook signature verification is available, verify the signature before trusting the payload: Firecrawl documents HMAC-SHA256 verification through the X-Firecrawl-Signature header in its batch documentation.
Make webhook handlers idempotent. Providers may retry delivery, so record event identifiers or safely update a task’s state without processing the same result twice. Acknowledge valid events promptly, and move expensive parsing or storage work to a background worker.
Control concurrency and batch size
A batch endpoint does not mean unlimited simultaneous processing. Providers may enforce limits per job, account, plan, or subscription. Firecrawl says batch concurrency defaults to the team’s full concurrent-browser limit and allows a per-job maxConcurrency setting; the value of 50 in its example illustrates 50 concurrent scrapes, not a universally appropriate setting. Scrape.do publishes plan-specific async concurrency limits, while Oxylabs says submission rates depend on the subscription plan. Consult the current provider documentation and account limits before setting these values.

Two published limits show why batch sizes should not be generalized: ScraperAPI’s undated documentation, accessed in 2026, states a maximum of 50,000 URLs per batch job; Oxylabs’ undated documentation, accessed in 2026, states up to 5,000 URL or query values per batch POST. Both figures are vendor-specific and may change. ScraperAPI recommends splitting a larger input into multiple batches; keep each batch within the active limit for your account.
More parallelism can make a job finish sooner, but it also consumes concurrency and may increase pressure on your own downstream systems. Begin within documented limits, monitor completion and failure rates, and tune only when the provider and your application can support the added load.
Handle partial failures and retries
Do not assume a batch is atomic. Some URLs can succeed while others fail or remain in progress. Track a state per item—such as submitted, running, succeeded, or failed—along with the provider’s status and any error details. Firecrawl documents failed-URL error inspection and page-level webhook events; Scrape.do advises checking task statuses and handling errors.
- Identify the individual task or URL that failed; do not infer failure from the overall batch status alone.
- Save its error response and attempt count alongside the original input.
- Retry only failed items when the provider’s status and error indicate a retry is appropriate. Avoid resubmitting successful URLs unnecessarily.
- Use bounded retries with a delay, and stop retrying permanent errors or items that exceed your application’s retry budget.
- Reconcile final outcomes against the original input list so every URL has a recorded disposition.
Selective retry is an implementation pattern enabled by per-URL status and error surfaces; the precise retry rules depend on the provider and error type. A timeout during submission can also leave uncertainty about whether the provider accepted a job. Check for an existing job or use provider-supported idempotency behavior if documented before submitting again.
Save results before they expire
Asynchronous job APIs are not necessarily durable archives. Scrape.do warns that task results are temporary and should be retrieved before ExpiresAt. Firecrawl says batch results are available through its API for 24 hours after completion, after which activity logs remain available. These retention statements are provider-specific; see Scrape.do’s async documentation and Firecrawl’s batch documentation.
Fetch and persist the fields your application needs as soon as the job completes. Store the source URL, retrieval time, task ID, result or extracted fields, and relevant error information. Apply your own retention and access controls, particularly if scraped content can contain personal or confidential data.

Choosing among batch APIs
Maximum batch size alone is a poor selection criterion. Compare how the provider accepts explicit URL lists, whether it supports synchronous and asynchronous operation, how it exposes per-URL outcomes, how you receive results, and how long those results remain retrievable.
| Provider | Documented workflow | Documented scale or handling detail |
|---|---|---|
| Firecrawl | Explicit-list batch; synchronous or asynchronous; async tracking by polling or webhook | Per-job maxConcurrency; batch results available via API for 24 hours after completion, according to the documentation accessed in 2026 |
| ScraperAPI | Asynchronous batch POST; response has one job record per URL | Maximum 50,000 URLs per batch job, according to undated documentation accessed in 2026 |
| Oxylabs Web Scraper API | Push-Pull asynchronous workflow; callback or cloud-storage delivery documented | Up to 5,000 URL or query values per batch POST; Push-Pull results available for at least 24 hours, according to undated documentation accessed in 2026 |
| Scrape.do | Asynchronous create-job, get-job, and get-task workflow | Plan-specific async concurrency; temporary task results and exponential-backoff guidance are documented |
These are descriptions of vendor documentation, not an independent performance ranking. Limits, plan names, and retention terms can change; verify them with the provider before building production assumptions around a figure. Also compare output needs: some workflows may return rendered or extracted data, while others require you to configure extraction separately.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
- Budget for variable completion time. Page rendering, target-site response, and provider queueing can vary. An asynchronous design lets your application continue other work while a batch runs.
- Keep submission and retrieval separate. Store job metadata at submission time, then collect results in a worker or webhook handler instead of making a user wait for every URL.
- Protect downstream services. Limit concurrent result processing and storage writes as well as scrape concurrency; a completed batch can produce a sudden burst of payloads.
- Estimate cost from provider billing rules. Confirm whether the account is charged per submitted URL, successful result, request, or another unit, and whether retries count. The cited batch documentation does not establish a common billing model across providers.
- Check the target site’s rules. This guide does not determine whether scraping a particular site is permitted. Review the site’s terms and applicable requirements for your use case.
Troubleshooting common batch problems
The API rejects the batch request
Check that you are using the chosen provider’s exact endpoint, authentication field, HTTP method, and JSON shape. Confirm that URLs are valid and that the batch is within the current limit for your account. A request format copied from another provider is not interchangeable.
The job is accepted but results are missing
Submission acceptance is not completion. Retain each returned job or task identifier and use the provider’s documented status or result endpoint, or configure its webhook/callback workflow. Check individual task states rather than assuming the batch-level state describes every URL.
Status checks return HTTP 429
You are sending status requests too frequently or have reached a provider rate limit. Back off with increasing delays, respect any retry guidance in the response, and consider switching production workloads to webhooks where supported. Scrape.do specifically documents 429 and recommends exponential backoff.
Some URLs fail while others succeed
Record errors per task, preserve successful results, and retry only the failed items when appropriate. Investigate whether the failure is transient or permanent before spending requests on repeated attempts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a batch endpoint guarantee that every URL will succeed?
No. Treat each URL or task as an independent outcome and reconcile its status and errors.
Can I use one provider’s batch request body with another provider?
No. Endpoint paths, authentication fields, request bodies, and result formats are provider-specific.
Is a screenshot API the same thing as a web scraping API?
No. A screenshot API returns a visual capture; extracting page text or structured fields requires a scraping or extraction workflow.
